Default V - Max Report

Went to Bruntingthorpe yesterday for a v-max day, great fun

As some of you know, my entire sunroof came out the last speed day back in November with the GPS showing 182mph, quite frightening. Hence, I was a little dubious of heading back up to the very upper echelons of 6th gear once again

Did a few runs up to 180 odd braking well before the traps and all seem well, motor feeling very strong in the 8 deg ambient, plus there was no crosswind also which really helped the stability. Before attempting a full bore run I heard the tales of modded 996tt's doing 195mph plus through the laser traps, I thought the Banana might be struggling to get up there considering the lofty claimed outputs of some of the cars

I should not have worried, as always RS Tuning power did not fail me and the first full bore run yielded a 196 on the trap board. I was like an elated little boy when braking back down ...... shouting and whooping, and raising a clenched fist Heavenward in thanksgiving

I did 196 four times over the day 1 up, and many 195 runs with a passenger, the last run of the day with Ruxpin onboard gave a 196 which was a very fitting way to end a magical day. Congratulations to Leon with a frankly amazing 211 mph winning trap speed in the RUF RT12

The 993 really is a privilege to drive under extreme WOT, it is lively at uber speed of course, but I adore how the little car feels so wrapped around you .... I feel so much a part of the proceedings. Also, by nature of the RS engine, I love how the motor makes the car so brutally fast but very smooth. A metifluous building of boost from low revs, animalising into savage peak torque, and then the sustained urge right to the redline in every gear.

Had a ride in a Carrera GT, wow, what a thing

Hope to post some data logs in the next few days.

Kind Regards

Martyn.

Well done, Martyn. Congratulations! Did you try the duct tape over the sunroof leading edge trick this time? And ... how are you going to find that extra 4 mph to become a member of the Double Ton Club?

Did not try any duct tape bb .... interesting Phelix had sensors set up at the mini v-max pre Christmas and the numbers suggested the roof is sucked out opposed to pushed out from within. I recall he said the cabin pressure dropped over the course of a high speed run. Phelix's car looked like KITT with all the wires and sensors, top stuff

The double ton .... mmmm ..... to get there would need to change the gearing as think 196 is the v-max of the car, a simple fix would be 19 inch wheels as Leon showed with the 198 he got with his turbo R with stock 6th. Simply a taller 6th would be folly, again as Leon showed with his RUF before reverting back to stock 6th. Would need whole new gear sets, which would be great fun, but might compromise motorway cruising with the revs too low at ~ 80 mph. A newer car is the weapon of choice for breaching 200mph me thinks

Congrats on the run!! Did you try any different alignment settings for the Vmax? I know some people drop the suspension as low as possible and run almost neutral to positive camber to minimize tire drag as the car squats at speed. What airpressures did you run in the tires?

Nicely done Martyn. Anything special for these runs other than one foot holding the other down?

eclou - cheers Am running PSS9 with fast road geometry, didn't change anything for the speed day. Was running factory settings of 36psi front and 44 psi rear.

Phelix, yep a mild dose of ignoring the potential risk is required I think!

sounds like a great time...I've never gone above 150 in a 993, would love to have more road to stretch the legs!

Very impressive speed. Were you at the rev limiter, and if so would raising it a couple of hundred rpm give you 200mph? Otherwise I guess that you could go for 295's rather than 285's on the rear?
Hope the mis-fire sorts itself out.

Life begins after 150 mph. Find a bigger road.

I'm saying 150 in my 993S and TT, in my gt3, and RS4...a lot more.

sfl - was on the limiter just about I think, don't want to raise the limiter, it was set by RS and don't to play with it! Might be a silly Q but how could 295's help me go faster? Do they have a larger profile or something and hence increase diameter?

The 993 with stock rear wing and Techart front splitter is quite lively at very high speed, though remember this is all in a straight line, and I find high speed cornering quite frightening. I ran a GT2 kit a while back and the stability was awesome, though the huge drag limits laser speed on the run way.

Shame you chaps are so far away, would be great to see how an Andial / Proto car went down the runway

Wow, 196 in a 993 is really impressive. I attended one of the early V-Max's at Bruntingthorpe organised through PH in a Maserati I used to own and posted 167 vs a claimed 172mph top speed. Braking from top speed for the bend at the end of the runway was interesting, how did it feel from 196?

My last couple of fun cars have been Lotus's which I didn't really think would suit a speed event but I'd love to see what my TT with 430 upgrade would feel like. Though I suspect it might set my off down the slippery slope of upgrades!
