Resurrecting an old thread because *I think I want* to run a Motul 15-50 but:

Which one? 6100, 8100 or 300v

Then on a 964 thread I read, while Motul is top high quality and pricey stuff, it said the range and duration was under 1000 miles and change after 1 year. I don't put that many miles on my car but I easily do greater than 1000 but probably less than 3000 in a year. I could see myself running a little over a year too unless there are strong objections to that.

thanks for any insight.

The additive package in Mobil Vtwin is better. Go to the Mobil website and look at the specs. It is also designed for the air-cooled engine..

Motul has changed there formulations. It's not the oil of yesteryear.

I'm using Castrol EDGE SPORT 10W-60 in mine. How do you see this oil Kevin? I live in climate that is not like dallas, nor like alaska, we are between and moderate climate pretty much all the year.

I think that you need to step up to a 15W... If you hit 90 degrees F in the summer a 20W like Mobil Vtwin is a great choice.

Since this thread was started years ago. Oil formulations have changed. Vtwin has come on the market. If one does a search, you will see many UOA, with VTwin actually reducing metal wear trends. That's what we want. A oil that can minimize and reduce wear.

Cool thanks Kevin.

Not to beat a dead horse but possibly so - it's Mobil V-Twin 20w-50? There's only one formulation for Mobil "V-Twin" it's 20w-50 fully synthetic, right?

The full ester oils of years ago aren't around. The VTwin is a full synthetic >>is it a 100% ester base>>not likely. I think that one of the only oils that has higher ester base stock is Mobil 1 racing 0W50. Go to there (Mobil) website and look at the ZDDP levels vs Motul.

Thanks Kevin. So this one that is "marketed" for motorcycles is the one our aircooled engines like best for their properties!?

An interesting read on a bunch of oil comparisons/tests.

http://www.combscustoms.com/pdfs/Amsoil_Study.pdf

It's supposed to be an independent test but Mobil V-twin is right up there with the 'winner' - Amsoil. I let my car sit for about 2 weeks and had the freight train smoke (very embarrassing) using a 10w. Driving Once a week to 1.5 times a week I have no problem. Need to switch soon.

Sorry if it's a repost.

Anyone try the liqui moly 10w60?
I currently have it in the motor and the mechanic swears by it. I know it's 10w but it's getting cooler here and I know from experience that a 10w60 is quite a bit more viscous than a 10/15w40

I use it in my wife's e46 M3. Its the recommended weight, the price is good and I can order it on amazon prime & get free shipping. As far as performance... M3 people seem to use liqui moly stuff regularly. That's the extent of my knowledge on it.

If you do a bit of a search you'll find posts showng highly desireable M1 VTwin oil analysis. Last time I looked the Mobil 1 site indicated very high ZDDP levels and pretty good ones for 15w50 as well. Detergents in the latter may be an issue.

I gotta say I switched to the Mobil V-twin and happened to let the car sit for 2 weeks after getting it smogged. And NO SMOKE at all like i used to get with whatever thinner oil was in it before. Braille battery was a-ok too. I feel much more confident now

All the recent receipts on my car showed the previous owner using 10W60 as well.

Valve tick sounds incredibly loud to me.. But apparently that's the norm?

The car is in Toronto and needs an oil change once it wakes up. The touted VTwin and Brad Penn at 20W50 seems a little extreme for the cooler temperatures we get around here in the fall / early-winter, so I'm not sure what to do yet.

Also just learned that Porsche themselves released a 10W60 oil for these cars earlier this month.. Interesting.
