What about M1 5-40? Saw some fully synthetic M1 5-40 for "turbocharged diesel trucks" Guess it's formulated for diesel and not for non diesel?? Does it matter??

Hello tt,
this lubricant is not on Porsche's Approved List as it is a "mixed fleet" Heavy Duty Engine Oil (HDEO) and consequently has not been tested by Porsche

It is MOST suitable for use in your engine!!
See the 12 Used Oil Analysis (UOA) reports on my 929S4 by searching for "Oil Condition Reports" in the 928 Forum here

It is one of the best lubricants available from any source and at any cost - it is a Group 4/5 formulation (with around 20% ester content) and has been on the market for nearly two decades

I have almost 10 years and many millions of kms experience with this lubricant in both cars and in my 500hp Detroit Diesel Series 60 powered heavy trucks

I use it in my Boxster and it will be in my CLK soon too

Regards

Hi tt,
yes, and a search of the 911, 993 and 996 Forums over April and May 2007 will produce a wealth of discussion on the matter of lubricants. Research unless it is done "clinically" and with "all of the doors open" is always challengeable - but it is well worth reading. Genuine peoplewill always produce food for thought and present a platform for discussion

Just to stir the pot, I believe any oil will be fine with frequent changes including filters. It is the simplest "mod" that anyone can do, hence the four pages of discussion.

I had seen this when searching for 5w-50 and dismissed it assuming it was a no-go for these cars... glad you asked tt!

Doug, how much do we give up at the higher temps comparing 15w-50 to the 5w-40? In a 100F climate, how much do I lose? Negligible?
Basic question I know... please keep it in laymen's terms if possible

Also, just to be clear, this is what we are talking about, right?: http://www.mobil1.com/USA-English/Mo...uck_5W-40.aspx

FWIW, I just switched to AMSOil TRO 20W-50 in my 993tt. I'm in Southern California where the ambient temps are rarely below 60F.

I switched from Mobil 1 15W-50 due to the reformulation (reduction of ZDDP) and the fact that I can't find it anywhere. I bought four gallons of TRO for $110.

Hi,

Mark - in simple terms the reduction in HTHS viscosity (@ 150C) is from 4.2cSt (M1 5w-50) to 4.1cSt (M1 TDT 5w-40) - very little indeed!

What's the start up viscosity at 25-30C. It would be nice to compare the data sheets thru the start up operating range..

Here is a good thread that one can get buried in for awhile.

Smile Viscosity comparison

Hi Kevin,
I have a viscosity calculator and as you will see the 5w-40 lubricant is a little more viscous than the 5w-50 version at some points

@10C = 453cSt v 523cSt (5w-40)
@15C = 341cSt v 380cSt (5w-40)
@25C = 200cSt (est.) v 213cSt (5w-40)
@40C = 105cSt v 102cSt (5w-40)

Regards

Hi Mark. Yes, that's the one. I saw lots of it at Wallyworld (Walmart).

Hi,
ruffy - I am reluctant to Post more on lubricants here because of the incredible amount of misinformation around

Mobil 1 15w-50 in any current formulation are all suitable for use in your car if you wish to use something not on the Porsche Approved List. It is a shame you cannot buy the Approved M1 5w-50 there

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 or Delvac 1 5w-40 (now called "ESP") would be what I would use in such as car if I owned one! I use it in my lowly Boxster!!!

Motul products are about line ball with many others - the V300 version in the correct viscosity is a robust product when changed at shorter OCI's than those nominated by Porsche. Their formulations and quality are both excellent

thanks doug.
living in these parts (singapore) makes it extremely hard to source for oils that NA sees.
ive exhaustively searched auzzie for anyone willing to export mobil vtwin... but again to no avail.
its SO frustrating.

To qualify my concerns, I am one of such owners that has experienced scored cams and premature valve wear. It was a costly affair.
I track my car, and i drive her hard....

appreciate your input and most likely will go for the m1 turbo diesel truck (assuming i can find it here)
motul will be my last option should all else fail.

thanks again for your invaluable insight
my name is chunn.
a pleasure to meet you
