Do the Turbo's have the SAI and valve guide problems that the NA 993's have

I never hear about SAI issues with turbos, but I think all the 993s can suffer from early valve guide wear. Funny thing is... I hear about those valve guide issues, but rarely see actual cases of folks needing to do it.

Steve, I used to feel the same way too, until it happened to my car... 40,000km and the exhaust valve guides were worn enough to make noise. I track the car often however so that probably accelerated the timeline.

Wow... 40,000km... that's only 24,000 miles!!! I know of many 993TTs with 60k ->80k miles, none of which has even been opened. Rufus had 86k miles when Ruf did their magic... but I don't know the condition of the guides at that time.

Yes, I heard that Lee had his car serviced at Bev Hills Porsche, and they determined it needed it at that time. I was never totally convinced... but that's the only 993TT I know about (aside from fc-racer) that had a top end due to guide wear at such a young age.

Mine were worn at 67K when Andial rebuilt, no symptoms that I detected.

Don,

You bring up an interesting point... I wonder how many of these cars have worn guides, but no one notices (or cares to notice). You have to pull off the turbos to get access to the lower valve covers... too big a PITA for most to bother with, so if its not using oil, why bother looking?

Also, your car has had rather "spirited" use, wouldn't you say?

On the Andial 3.8tt that we are rebuilding the top end on, I sodablasted the heads/cylinders/cam towers, and there was a pretty good amount of carbon buildup in the SAI passages. Not enough to completely clog em, but a surprising amount for the low mileage. The car is a '97tt w/ only about 45k miles on the clock, and I know the Andial conversion was done pretty early in its life. Thing is, I need to double check exactly how many miles are on the engine, since the guy blew it up once already by accidentally running pump gas on the race gas map. So, Andial has rebuilt the engine once already, and I think that was about 10k miles ago, I will find out.

The point is though, all 993 series cars could be afflicted with this, though like everyone else I have not heard of SAI CEL problems as much on TTs. I heard somebody on this board cite that the SAI ports on the TT are further from the valves or something like that, but I checked the TT parts with the 993NA engine that we had apart at the same time, passages/locations looked the same (although this was a quick eyeball check). Another point is, based on what I've seen with NA 993s, it does NOT take much carbon to clog those passages, so your oil consumption may not necessarily be bad, but the ports can be clogged. I know for a fact that the factory NA 993 guides were/are too soft. But, there is endless debate on this subject on the NA 993 board, check it out. I am curious to find out exactly what type of valve guides Andial uses, vs the stock TT and the NA 993s, I will do some research and post my findings here. I would also like to hear Kevin and Steve @ Rennsport weigh in on TT valve guides . . .

The 993TT guides are the same soft guides. We are seeing more and more engines torn down for topend overhauls due to guides...

When I was researching what could be causing my ticking noise, I contacted several of the rennlist gurus including Kevin and Steve. Steve sent some notes on cars he had seen with worn guides, one was a NA 993C4S with less than 10k miles!

My car now has 42,000km on it, still a baby

I had my valve guides done under warrantee at 13,000 miles. Paid the difference and had the bronze valve guides installed and no problems which should have been done in the first place.

Who manufactures the "bronze" valve guides?....Porsche?? Are these the ticket for our engines??
