Texas heat strikes again! Glad you found the problem, good luck on the resolution.

Eeek!!! Is this a harness from an early 993tt that would have been subject to the harness recall had it stayed in a 993?

Hi Phelix. The wire harness had a date: 11/97.

Tip: do not disturb ANY wiring or harness in the engine compartment. So long as they are not moved, they will not fracture. The actual wiring is ok, it's the insulation that's brittle. When I did my lifters, I took the usual physician mentality and moved as much out of the way for exposure, exposure, exposure. I'm not about to tackle this octipus of wires by installing a new one.....not yet anyway, Anybody know how I should approach this? Thinking of individually wrapping with electrical tape.

Chris, more like Multiple Sclerosis, or Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy.

anybody with some tips for me??

Splitting hairs perhaps but your wiring's not OK. Insulation plus conductor equals wire. One without the other isn't sufficient.

I would replace the harness. But before that identify what has caused the harness to degrade and ensure that cause is eliminated. Is that really just from higher ambient temps? Seems hard to believe.

Where did you find that 11/97 date code?

Left out of my post above: the degraded insulation is unlikely to be limited to just the areas you've found so far. Splicing new wires in will be very difficult with the harness in the car and if you've taken the harness out to repair it then it's just the trade-off between buying a new one vs repairing the old one and being comfortable that you've found and fixed every problem area. I know which one I would chose.

The harness should stay flexible to cope with engine movement and vibration. The insulation will stiffen with age but it shouldn't get brittle to the point where it flakes off. That's a sign of the wrong or poor quality insulation.

If you haven't already seen it you might want to look at http://members.rennlist.com/pcaracin...gharness5.html The TSB gives instructions on removing and replacing the harness and the part numbers and date code for the faulty harnesses.

Dude, you NEED a new harness. You will not be the first. There was a huge recall/campaign on this, maybe your covered.

Hi guys......thanks for the info. I'm wondering if it is covered when the engine is in a 964? If I had this in a 993tt body, I would definately go and check out Posche NA for a campaign fix....but in a 964??

Phelix....what I meant to say is the connections are functionally working even if the insulation is toast. Yeah, I know it's "not ok".

Default UPDATE

Whoah, I was able to get the oem wiring harness for around 180 bucks! Compared to over 700 bucks, this was a great deal!!

For anybody needing a wiring harness, Porsche had a special number for a "KIT" which included some washers, renewing nuts, and, oh, the wiring harness. FYI

Jamie,

Its very bizarre... the Sunset Porsche price for the OEM harness is $610. However, you can buy a "harness repair kit" for $90, and it includes the $610 harness, some wire ties, and something else. Weird. I've ordered a new harness for Rufus... Rufus does not qualify for the freebie due to the VIN being too late (build date is 3/96). I'd be interested in the number of hours of labor involved to replace the harness. Anybody know?

So if you order the harness its $610 and if you order the $90 Repair kit that includes the $610 wire harness? What am I missing?
