Default You might be a Redneck Porsche Owner - Differential Removal

Well, with help from fellow Rennlister Porschespeeddemon we removed the front diff today.

The amount of leaking diff oil was just nuts. It stinks and gets on EVERYTHING.

Getting the diff unbolted from the shaft and the axils was the easy part. Working the sucker loose from the tube was another story. After talking to "Super Bob" on the phone he gave us a few things to try and we got it loose.

Below are the pictures of the Redneck car repair in process. Every nieghbor that commented got the same answer "if you're going to have a car on blocks in front of your house, at least it is a Porsche)

Also there are pictures of the inside of the diff and the damage.

Anyone have a used diff to sell I would be really appreciative

Tim, you breaked it good this time. I immediately put those clothes in the washing machine, and I still smell like diff fluid, but at least it's back in the garage.

Some WD40 should patch that right up....how many hydraulic jack do you own anyway?

Wow, that failed in a big way. 2 thumbs-ups on digging right in...keep us posted on what you do next...

I own 6 actually

4 big ones and 2 little ones.

If I can find a used one I will put it right back in. I would suggest that ALL of you check your fluid.

Is there a way to just convert it to rwd and leave it out? Try powerhouse II transmissions, they can probably fix that box.
Good luck Tim, brings back memories.

Tim,
Wow , that diff is stuffed big time ! Looks like a crown wheel tooth broke of and jammed the diff . Big twist and the side case gave way.

I am always suprised that basically the same small C4 diff is used on the turbo.
The torque difference between turbo and N/A is big !

Just in case , you are using standard size tires ? Dont want a repeat !!

Lets hope you can find another diff really easy .

Good luck

Geoff

From the amount of fluid I caught and what was on the ground It had fluid. It was in bad shape though. We will see what happens. Right now the garage stinks of gear oil. YUCK

Holy catastrophy batman!! That was a significant failure. I can get some of the parts if you need a rebuild, but the housing's might be a toughie. Good luck!

Mmmmm... gear oil...
