Exclamation HELP! Technical Advice Needed

Yes its summer and I have been driving around Alaska like a bat out of hell....the TT seems to be running perfectly. BUT.....

Today, on the garage floor, I noted a small leak out the front end...and I thought.."Golly.....here is my steering rack leak that I have been waiting for" so crawled underneath and huh....the boots and surrounded areas are dry...GREAT!

Then I pop the front lid...the Pentosin reservoir is full and all oily...appearing to be overflowing onto the deck floor and eventually leaking out. My hydraulic fluid level is also low.........so I search Rennlist (of course) and have become convinced my slave is bad. NOT SO GREAT!

The clutch seems to be working fine........

-Where do I go from here? Is this DIY'able?...I did remove/reinstall my own turbos (thanks Kevin) and my valve covers myself, installed a suspension (thanks Gert), oil change etc.........but this is new ground for me...I am no mechanic. I get the impression that the slave replacement on the TT is not simple and much different from the N/A cars.....and I will be forced to let another person work on my car

Please advise on what you would do next.........I await your bad news

Thanks is advance.

MaRC

Marc, generally if you can replace your starter you can replace the slave.. You end up hugging the tranny and twisting and turning yourself to get access to the bolts.. It isn't a tough job, just takes some time.. Easier than replacing your TT valve covers.. You might want to think about replacing your accumulator also which is also right there... FYI, I have a slave cylinder on my shelf..

Do it yourself. Revel in the greasiness and embrace the cramps and scrapes of outrageous inaccessability!

OK...I will go for it. Would you guys say it is fairly likely that my problem is the slave? I have no idea where to start...I even bought the TT service manuals on Ebay and there is nothing on the slave R&R. If someone has some details on this job...any help would be GREATLY appreciated (think: describing landing a 747 to an intellectually impaired teenager)....I will even make a DIY thread and send out some smoked (fresh) salmon for the help. I may even post humiliating pictures of myself playing mechanic....like last time.

Also, anyone have the part # for the TT slave cylinder? I am having a hell of a time finding info on this in the service manual and PET...why is god punishing me!

Kevin....thanks again for coming to the rescue...e-mail sent.

There is a bleeder valve on the slave, suck out as much as you can to minimize the drips on your face as you work. It sits on top of the trans, so get the car as high as you can and plan on working with one arm around each side of the trans. Disconnect all the lines, then unbolt the slave and remove it. When done refill with the special Pentosin fluid from Porsche. I recommend a Griot's Garage vacuum brake bleeder to suck out before and bleed the air after replacement. Pictures should be hilarious if your face gets as greasy as mine did! Slave#99311623752, Accumulator#99331416600. Like Kevin said, replace the accumulator at the same time-you'll be glad you did, it's not a place you want to go twice!

It took about 8 hours. Most of the time was spent trying to hold the new slave in place with two hands and threading in the mounting bolts with a third, wait I didn't have three hands! Now I understand why it took so long.

Marc - look at the section of the manual on replacing the starter. It may be there. I remember it was one of the steps in doing the starter on my old 964 and was shown in the manual.

Thanks guys for the tips.......I have decided to get under my car, hug the transmission all day, soak my middle aged body with Pentosin Hydraulic Fluid and replace it myself. As you probably know, the 993 TT slave cylinder is a creation of insane German engineering that is conveniently bolted on top of the tranny, connected to high pressure hydraulic lines. In fact, I learned Porsche abandoned the setup after the 993 TT to a more practical solution because 50% of those who tried to replace it went insane and either got locked up or sold their body parts for medical science experiments. But I am going to go for it....I am NO mechanic. I will post humbling pictures of my quest for Porsche Enthusiast Street Credit. Parts should be here by Friday....going in on Sat. Light Anesthesia and new stereo in the garage being prepped tonight.

Keep sending those pointers........

The funny thing is....I love this ****.

I hear you. I love that **** too. I would be a worse mechanic than you mate, but what the hell, I always give things a go as well.
With the help of this website anything is possible.
The skin will grow back......mine always does, every time! I even did my new HFS and cat bypass myself. To a lot this is an easy job. Still took me about 2 weekends. Worth it though.
Good luck.

You know that you could drop your tranny and install the lightweight clutch that you wanted..
The slave would be easy pickings then.

They are sitting on the shelf.. One of my customers coined this phrase.

"A lightweight clutch kit install is like bolting on 30HP"
