Default Loud ticking Came and Went...Valve Guides or Exhaust Issue???

When I pulled into my garage yesterday I had a loud ticking. I thought it might be an exhaust leak. When I started the car this morning it was making the same noise. I drove it down to my local Porsche guy, but when I got there it has stopped completely. I just drove it home and it's still NOT making the noise. The car is running great.

I have 25,000 mile on the car. Could this be a bad valve guide? Has anybody had this happen?

Kevin, The oil is about 2,000 miles old. I checked it and the level looks good.

Your lifters are bleeding pressure and pumping back up with air.. It won't heal itself.. I wrote a DIY article 3 years ago on Rennlist.. Maybe someone can find it..

That happend to me when I left the car for a long period without start the engine. I let it ran for a couple of minutes and then the noise dissapear. As I understand, the lifters loose pressure and make the noise.

Kevin, do you remember how you worded the DIY? Maybe I can look for it, but did you use the word "DIY lifter repair", or something like that? I too have a discharged lifter I need to repair (all of them while I'm down there).

I tried a search but only goes to 12/04 under your username

Jaime, the sad thing is you will have to pull your turbochargers to get to take the lower valve covers off..

Ha! that's funny.."destroy it yourself". I've seen this write up, was looking for Kevin's write-up.

Kevin, no problem...much easier than fixing people.
