Default Clutch Question

Today, when depressing the clutch pedal, I started hearing the much talked about 'clicking' noise. Can also easily feel this in the pedal. Clutch engages fine (although it does so in top 1 - 2 inches of pedal travel) with no change in pedal force. Car is a 96 TT, 41K miles. Slave cyl was replaced at 31K.

I've searched this subject in the archives (both turbo and NA) and wound up a bit more confused. The few posts in the turbo archives indicate this is no big deal (just needs to be lubed) and that a failing slave cylinder is accompanied by a stiffer pedal. When my slave was replaced before, no clicking, just a stiffer pedal so this makes sense.

However, owners of NA cars which experience the 'click' all seem to report this to be a symtom of a failing slave cylinder. Now, I know the turbo clutch system is set up differently from the NA cars. I just don't fully understand the similarities of the two and whether the symptoms I'm experiencing are pointing towards a slave cyl issue or something else altogether? Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

My slave cylinder failure involved an overflow of hydraulic fluid in the trunk, no noises or functional differences.

My experience was the same as 911/Q45. The slave cylinder failure caused the clutch fluid resevoir in the trunk to overflow.

The stiff pedal is usually caused by a failure of the accumulator. When it fails, the pedal will typically be stiff until the engine is running for a few seconds.

That's what I thought with repsect to the slave and accumulator. With respect to those, operations seems normal. What could be causing the clicking? The noise doesn't bother me. Its the fact that the feel through pedal is as if something is binding and then letting loose. Definitely not normal. I haven't had a chance to start poking around yet. Any ideas on where to start? Pedal cluster maybe? Anything else worth lookgin into?

When the slave cylinder was replaced, if it wasn't done in conjunction with the clutch, the difficulty in access could have led to it not being properly bolted in. If it is a bit loose back there, that could result in binding and clicking.

I have the same issue. I'm 99.9% certain it's the pressure plate that's failing; probably due to heat/age etc. If/when it starts to slip it will be replaced. Don't worry until then.

My pedal is usaully stiff when I first get in after a few days... softens right up after the car runs for a couple of seconds... My 96 was the same way... It's normal, right?

It probably means your accumulator is bad.

What does a bad accumulator mean... is that something I need to address now?... what could happen?

The accumulator just holds hydraulic pressure after the engine is turned off. I wouldn't bother changing it until the slave cylinder is replaced or the engine is out for another reason.
