Default Oil viscosity and change questions.

I did a forum search and surprisingly not much turned up on this topic. I apologize if somehow I've missed the discussion. I do not have the owner's manual for my 1997 TT with 14k miles. I have ordered one twice through my dealer but Porsche has not delivered. I have been trying to get one for 6 months. I would be interested in knowing your experience. Do most people use Mobil 1? Does your climate influence your decision, whether you race or track your car, viscosity suggestion, how long have you've owned your car or mileage in which you have followed your recipe, and what your threshold is for when to change the oil.
Thanks.

Enclosed is a new Faq sheet for Mobil 1 new extended performance oil.. Yes, Mobile 1 is very popular.. The only weight that I would not recommend is 0W-40, this is the standard fill at the Pcar dealer, they are using it for the newer vario cam engines, which does not apply to our air cooled high temp engines.. Depending on where you live will determine what weight you use...

I use Royal Purple 15W-40... for the most part because the PO used it so just want to keep the continuity. However I don't track the car.

EThec how many miles do you put on your car? I'm old school and change the oil around 3000 miles... Oil is cheap.. when you look at what it cost to replace your bearings.. It would be interesting to do a poll as to when people change there oil on there TT..

Kevin,
i'm averaging around 1000 miles/month. i was going to do regular changes with the regular mobil 1 every 5000 miles. that would be an interesting poll though.....

Kevin;
you're right about the dealer 0-40. I went back to my records and noticed they changed from 15-50 to 0-40 in 2001. I have mine changed yearly and it's usually about 1500-2000 miles. Think I'll start doing it myself. Just need some great jack stands and tools.

Tony;
I think 300 miles is too long between changes. Cut it to 100. You can never be too careful.

I agree with Kevin. 0-40 might be okay for a new engine/factory fill, but as tolerances increase with age and wear 0-40 (IMHO) is too thin. I might consider 5-40 for winter driving depending on ambient temps, but for summer heat I would go to 10-40. at least.
