Question What ecu do I have? Can't find numbers

Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out if I have the 1996 or 1997-98 programable ecu. I looked at the silver box top/sides/back and see no numbers or letters other than "Motronic". Do I need to open the box and look inside?

Or, is there something inside that would tell me if it's a 1996, like two chips vs one or something?

thnks, Jaime

Jaime:

Look for the Bosch numbers on the sticker you see on the cover. Its just above the Porsche part numbers and its looks like this:

0 261 204 xxx. Those last 3 numbers are the key ones.

Let me know what you have.

Hi Steve, thanks for the quick reply.

The only data on the ecu is a ripped-up, practically missing sticker on the wire harness that has badly fading info, but no decernable numbers, essentially useless. The box itself has no stickers. It has a "Powerhaus" sticker from when Powerhause in Arizona shoe-horned the 993tt into my 964-based America Roadster.

I called Powerhaus and spoke to the owner whom stated that this ecu was sent to Porsche AG in Germany to get a "constant 14.7:1 air to fuel ratio no matter how much air is flowing through engine....the right way of doing it". Apparently there is no set HP numbers...Is this reasonable?

Reason this is important to me right now is I'm contemplating sending my turbo's to Kevin to get a stage 2 going, but am concerned about what exactly is my ecu made of. With the above info about constant 14.7-to-one makes me feel somewhat safe. Not that I don't trust Powerhause, but as a physician, we tend to double/triple check and cross reference data to make sure things jive...However, all this ecu reprograming is out of my league and have to rely on info given to me as gospel....or should I ? Is there a way to bench-test my ecu and double/triple/cross-reference check?

David is incorrect.. If a air-cooled turbo sustained 14.7 to 1 you'd have a meltdown on every cylinder.. Off throttle cruise mode you'll see 14.7... for fuel economy.. I'd ask him.. " Okay, I'm bolting on 2 K26's and you can guarantee the safety of my engine and that it won't melt down from going lean?"

Hmm..., don't want to create any flames or have any he said/you said wars. But I see what you mean.

So, Since I have dealt with Todd knighton in past and purchased his 5 bar fuel regulator, I am going to send him my ecu. He's going to check it out and set me straight. In the end anybody can undrestand I don't want a molten hunk of aluminum under my whale tail!

meanwhile, after I pull out my ecu, can anybody tell me how to determine if it's a 1996 or 97-98? Would greatly appreciate it

Jaime:

If the numbers are all gone on the cover, the only only way to know what you have is by opening up the ECU and looking at the circuit board.

If you can take a nice sharp picture of the CB, I can ID it.

So can Todd K.

Ok, I hope this comes out clear. A little on the dark side, but the flash gave too much reflection

So, this means that I can have it calibrated to higher fuel maps for hibrid turbo's right?.....Kevin, Steve??

Jaime:

Your ECU is programmable.

JR:

The bar-coded chip is the engine EPROM. The '96's have two smaller side-by-side EPROMS.

Thumbs up

Steve or Kevin or anybody, can you help me by hitting your back arrow to the thread called "help identify this piece * Pictures* ". I don't necessarily need to know what it's for, but would sure like to connect it to where it suppose to go.

thanks a bunch,

Jaime
