Default Why are 993 Tirbps so expensive?

I was browsing various generations of Turbo on BAT recently looking for a good entry into the 911 Turbo world, and noticed that the auction prices of 993 Turbos are completely crazy, at least compared to second-hand 997, 996, and 991 Turbos. Most are commanding sales prices upward of 200k or even 300k, with mileage on the cars. Other generations of Turbo, even newer ones like the 997 and 991, are fraction of these prices.

Can you guys explain to me why these cars are so in-demand? Is it the combination of the Turbocharged engine and the last of the air-cooled 911s? Is that it?

The new ones are mass produced. 996TT ugly headlights, 997TT in manual is cool but the GT3 RS's are more sought after. The 993 Turbo was the last of it's kind. If you look at 964 turbos, the 3.3 and 3.6 are super expensive.

Anyone can buy a new Porsche.. finding an old one with no stories is more of a challenge.

Default 993 turbo's

Besides what's already been mentioned, there are some other factors to consider. First is the supply-demand curve. From a former post on this list, there were only approximately 1900 993 turbos available. (have not fact checked whether that the total produced or the total for the US market). With so few available the value goes up. Second, the 993 turbo is the pinnacle of air cooled genre with 408 HP AND the last of the air cooled turbos.

I would like to add....and I'll get my flame proof suit on here....the 993's were the last cars Porsche produced that were true Porsche's. As usual, this is just my opinion and I could be wrong.

Boomers.

A good entry into the turbo 911 world would be a 996 or 997. They are actually much better cars than the 993.

They just aren't collectables

But this one collector on youtube was saying that the 996 and 997 are terrible models, and the 993 is the last of the great air-cooled Porsches. Is there an element of truth to that or not? I think his main point was that the 997 Turbo is too fast for the streets and too boring, and the 996 is too weird and ugly. I mean, this guy is air-cooled through and through, but he does raise some good points. He's the "Rennthusiast" guy on youtube.

You should have said "Millennials, a good entry point etc." Boomers can afford a 993 and regarding prices, the market never lies. See comment above.

A good entry point for turbocharged 911 is a 991.2 Carrera. Same price or even less than some 996 and 997 turbo and more to choose from.

Before you knock 996 and 997 turbos you should drive one.

You could say the same thing about PDK cars.

The point is, buy the latest 911 you can afford. The old 911's are just stablemates.

996 turbo is over 20 years old now. Telling anyone to buy a 20 year old car is bound to end up with expensive maintenance bills. This would make a horrible entry-point.

Not if the car is well taken care of. A 993 turbo is 28 years old, does that not need maintenance?

Of course it does. I suggested a 991.2 as an entry point.. not a 993, 996, or 997 turbo.

What are the maintenance expectations of the average second-hand 993 Turbo vs. the average second-hand 997 Turbo, for instance?

That all depends on mileage, maintenance history, & preventative maintenance the previous owner has addressed. Rule number #1 get a PPI
