Any of you high HP, chipped fellows have your stock ECU gathering dust? I would be interested in purchasing it. Thanks.

Addison,
When you "chip" a 97 TT you pull out the ECU have it reprogrammed and stick it back in. Therefore, these guys do not have their old ECU available to us 96 guys.
The bad news for us is first you have to find a 97 ecu and then pay again to have it reprogrammed.
I found one guy on eBay selling an already reprogrammed 97 ECU and he was looking for $2k.
Fortunately for me, someone on this site had copied over a posting from 6speedonline where someone was trying to sell a 97 ECU which had been programmed by FVD. I got it for only $550 and count myself as blessed.
Your best bet is to hunt around on eBay or the dismantlers looking for a 97 ECU which you can then have re-programmed to match you mods.

Thanks Hal,
Yeah, I'm hoping someone has replaced their ECU with one from RUF, FVD, etc and has their virgin one sitting in the garage and willing to sell cheap!
Paul,
Steve is selling the NA chip and if I had a 97 like you, I'd be sitting pretty!

I found a used 97 ECU that had a Gemballa program already in it. Not as cheap as Hal's deal, but better than buying a new 97 ECU and having it redone. Adison, contact Viperbob about reprogramming your ECU when you find one. Oldguy is real happy.

I'm confused. I've been talking with a well known chip tuner and looking at the GIAC 430, 480 and 520 HP chips for the 1996 TT. Nowhere is the need for a 1997 ECU mentioned. Are you looking for the 1997 ECU because the GIAC chip or specialized dyno tuning cost too much? You may want to look into the UniChip piggyback controller. Keven says he's seen intermittant results, but Unichip's referral list is noteworthy.

I'm looking for a 97 ECU so I can have Steve Weiner remap it to go along with the Cargraphics oil cooler I am getting from Kary to go along with the K16/24 hybrids I plan to get from Kevin to go along with all the little (but very expensive) things plus the install I plan to get from Viperbob.
I'm just trying to plan ahead!

You will need a 97 ECU as Weiner's mapping is the same as ours. GIAC is quiet honestly the best out there. Of course I am partial. Proto does offer mapping for the 96 chips, but I have no experience with those. And on Steve's ECU CA993TT we got damn lucky with that!

Thanks all:
Yes Bob, I wrote GIAC and you are correct. Damned!
Gteat choice adsc4s, I'm also going to use Kevin's stage 2 ZC's.
Porsche PhD, GIAC is NOT the best if they can't find the old chips!
gjb, Gunther is the "well known chip tuner" that I spoke of. He has some of the old chips stockpiled. I'll take a look at Promotive, but Kevin recommends Gunther, and everyone recommends Kevin, so I'm inclined to go with the best, and that of course is Gunther.

I must mentioned that I do strongly recommend Gunter (his spelling)for the best tuning that you can have when you want to have a custom programmed tune for your car. He knows the Bosch code! He worked for Bosch. He has the chips to convert most '96 cars! So with that said, I must also add, that GIAC provides the best chip ECU tuning when the situations persist that you want to mail your '97 ECU into GIAC OR dealer!!! There is no finacial bias in this situation, Gunter provides the best tune for your car, he will be arriving in the US, around the 7th of July.. You folks can email me and I will forward his email address to you.
Edit: My judgement is based on years of service that I have seen, driven, monitored, his work in cars (993TT) since '97-'98... Alain has had the most recent in person visit with Gunter. He might chime in to give his views...

well, kevin is correct. Gunter is coming to the U.S on the 7th and I have 3 cars lines up for him. Now I am facing the problem that I sold my 96 ECU and the I do not wish to change the mapping of my 450 HP Porsche ECU. Personally, I believe that if you can afford a custom tune done specifically for your car (tailored to your specific mods) it would be hard to beat. GIAC, FVD and others are off the shelve products.
So that's my deal. Gunter also did confirm that he can use the 96 ECU but there would be an extra approximate cost of $500 for a single use chip. Meaning if you wanted to reprogram it at a later date, you have to fork out another $500 plus the reprogram.
We shall see how it goes. I'll keep you posted
BTW I have a brand new pair of K24's available if anyone is interested. PM me is interested.

Addison and others. Well, I talked to Todd over at Protomotive a couple of days ago, and he seemed pretty knowledgeable as they do all of their own hardware and software over there. Also, everyone else doesn't seem to be able to get the kind of horsepower that Todd is claiming to get, which is 480hp and they can do it with my existing 96 ECU with a piggyback. I think that I'm going to send my 96 computer over to him for programming and will let you guys know how it turns out.
