Default windshield squeak

I get a squeak in the windshield, which I understand is not unknown in 993's.

Is the best fix the silicon rope in the windshield track? Is this permanent fix?

What is the charge for doing this?

Does the dealer do this?

Is this covered under the Porsche (extended) warranty?

Thanks,

Do a search on the 993 board for lots of threads on this subject. I'd be more helpful, but I don't remember what was said... being an old geezer and all...

I tried to read everything there already, but not definitive.

Midwest..... once upon a time I had the dreaded front windshield squeak.
I installed the rope and also purchased the silicone spray and applied it as directed, it was a pretty easy install you just need to use a soft plastic tool to gently lift up the edge of the windshield gasket on the (I found that a burnishing tool used by vinyl sign installers works great, no damage)body side and slip in the cord, in some areas you will probably be able to press the cord in two layers thick and in some areas you'll be hard pressed to get it in at all.

With the silicone spray the windshield stopped making noise for about 6 mo. and then it returned but noticably not as bad, I then tried Pedros Ice Wax (a lubricant used for bike chains) the squeaking is completely gone. I also applied it to the rear glass, no noise what so ever, I have heard of people just using the Pedros by itself with success.

Good luck with your project

Ah, thanks for the explanation. I didn't understand that the rope was installed with the window in place - I thought the window had to be removed.

Where do I get the rope? Is this something the dealer does? What was the cost?

And what did the squeak sound like? Mine is more like rain on a canvas tent than a high pitched squeak.

If my memory serves me correctly Schatz motorsports has it (the cord is an OEM part with a Porsche part number)I dont see it on the web site but I think they have it, the cost was about $9.00 for the cord and about the same for the silicone spray.

I didn't have the dealer do it, it was an easy install, I would recomend the Pedros Ice Wax, it works great. ebay is a good source for it or a bike shop just get the can with the straw(easier to slip under the gasket).

As for the tamber of your noise? I think everyone would have a different description as to what it sounded like. but knowing just how common the problem is the windshield fix is a good place to start, I would bet that is your problem. Mine sounded like leather rubbing Its an easy DIY and when the problem goes away you will have satisfaction that you can deal with many of the little problems these cars have yourself.

I used Pedro's Ice Wax, worked like a charm. Just spray it under the rubber and let it dry.

Drats! I tried Pedro's but no effect.

Guess i should try the rope now? Someone suggested removing the rubber seal to do so, other posts just having it be wedged in.
