Post Windshield Washer Help

Hello! Issue: the windshield washer on my recently purchased 993 doesn't work. No apparent sound when lever pulled back. Fuse looks ok. Headlight washer works. Ideas on what to check next? Also, where's pump located and how can I gain access to it? Thanks in advance for replies.

Jay;

It is common to have to replace the pump. I have had to replace one already. It is located on the outside of the windshield reservior, which is located above your fender skirts on the drivers side front fender. There is a drain cap that helps you remove the fluid prior to pulling the pump out.

Kevin, thanks for the quick reply. I'm assuming that access requires removing fender liner(skirts?). Any consumables needed (pop rivets, etc) or other advice before I set out? Regards, Jay <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

Not sure here, but wouldnt it make sense if the headlight washers work, there is only one pucp supplying fluid to both? Not sure though. Someone more knowledgable than me will probably know.

Same thing with me about 3 weeks ago - windscreen washers packed up, can't hear the motor when you try to use them, but the headlight washers work just fine. Does anyone know if it is the same pump that controls both? Its certainly only 1 fuse for both..

You have 2 Pumps a bigger one for the Headlights
the Hose is 1/2 inch and a smaller one for the
Windshield the Hose here is 1/4 inch. You can access them by taking out the left Headlight
and just pull out the Pump . It is only sticking in a Rubber o-Ring and not bolted on .

Jay;

All you need is a phillips screw driver and to make things easier, you can take your tire off. Speedster is correct about the 2 pumps.

Yes, there are two pumps, although I think the new one you will be supplied with has a variation on the electrical contacts( check you get all the metal connections), ie you may have to solder it,I think; sorry its three years since mine gave up!

Howdy,
This same problem just happened to me today. I came across this thread by searching the archives. Does anybody have any more detailed descriptions on how to go about replacing/locating the pump? I removed the wheel-well liner and then promptly got lost…
I took pictures of what I saw:

Can somebody point me in the right direction, please?

Thanks,

Jim
Have not replaced either of my pumps, but they are located behind the driver's side headlight as described in harald's post above.
By just removing the headlight the washer reservoir & both pumps can be easily seen w/easy access to the pumps. Hope this helps.

So long as the headlights are on when you push the washer stalk the spray will be activated to clean them.

Jim, the bolt that's located at the top left in your second picture from the top is one of the three bolts that hold the bladder (windshield washer bottle) in-place. The unit should drop down once all three bolts have been removed. As mentioned above, you want to pull the small pump. Note: Remember to re-install the rubber support between the two pumps when you replace.

I had a similar problem with my headlight washers.
Turned out that the contacts on the headlight washer relay (R43) were dirty.
Have you checked R42, your wiper intermittent relay for bad connections?
Clean ALL the terminals with some 1500 silicon carbide paper and then "rinse" them thoroughly with some TV tuner cleaner (available at Radio Shack).
