I agree... if you are looking for a car, spend the money on the service. In all likelyhood you will need to perform multiple checks and it is well worth the limited $$$ it costs for the service.

I've found that Carfax really offers very little information about previous wrecks... all but the most serious with a police report filed are not in the data base.

In my experience, Carfax is crap. I was looking for a Maxima for my son and the Carfax came up clean. I then had my mechanic check the car and it was clear that it had been involved in a major accident which never showed up in the report. Some non-reputable used car establishments will only buy cars at auction which have frame damage AND a clear Carfax since most consumers only do this type of check.
Also heard that Carfax was owned by the same people that own the largest auction houses. Don't know if this is true or not.

Kevin,
Steve x 2 are (is?) correct. The only thing Carfax is good for is establishing where the car was registered and based. A good way to see if the seller is giving you a line of crap about "one owner based in the high desert of Arizona".
The Carfax will tell you if the car had ten owners and was home based in the tropical rainforest.
In a winter snowstorm this past Feb my wife rolled and nearly totalled her mini-van. Fortunately no injuries. The van was put through insurance with a $10k bill. I traded immediately after the repair was completed (new Honda Pilot - what a tank!!). Anyway, just for yucks checked the CarFax a few months ago - nothing.
