Dealer wants my car...
Went by a dealer last weekend in Atlanta in my '96 C4S to check out the latest offerings. They had a new C4S and I drove it to compare...what a nice car!
Anyway, the sales manager was chatting with me and said he has people looking for 993's (especially "S" models) all the time. He showed me a nice 2001 996 with 20K miles on it and said he would trade me close to even for it. I thought he was kidding me but when I pressed him he assured me that he was serious. His first offer amounted to my car + $5k. He said that used 996's are moving slow but he could turn the 993 quickly.
The 996 looked like a nice car (silver/black) but with low options. It is under warranty, of course. I didn't even drive it (to avoid temptation) nor did I counter his offer.
However, after a few days thought I am starting to think about how nice a "newer"car would be. Any opinions?

You are asking the wrong board about what they think in trading a 993 for a 996. If for no other reason, the fact that the dealer is willing to do almost an even trade, should tell you something.

996s are very nice cars but I wouldn't jump. Here's my insight. One of the most enduring and endearing features about the 911 is the sheer brilliance in style. It's timeless.
The 996 styling doesn't do it for me. The 996s is "forgettable" looking. Every 911 iteration, IMO, looks great if not better in non-kit form except the 996.
Look at the new UK publication evo magazine. They have some interesting shots of the 997 which is much more to my liking.
Just my $.02 worth...

You guys are right! It's not unusual to be tempted by a younger woman in gaudy make-up
Anyway, I had to ask myself the basic question:"Why would the dealer want my 7 year old car for an almost equal trade?" That in itself should tell me something about the value of the 993.
The voice of reason has returned...thanks for the moral support. I think I'll go out for a drive to reaffirm my committment!

A quick look at the current market helped sway me as well. This should scare the 996 guys. Sounds similar to what the dealer was offering so maybe it wasn't such a great deal after all...

right they arent going to do anything without making a buck.

I don't know, Viken. For the guys who are leasing or for the guys who plan to keep their car forever that may be true. But for the average Joe making a car payment and wanting to trade up to a 997 in a couple of years it would concern me from a financial sense.
From my admittedly limited experience with 911's they have always held their value better than many cars. The really nice 993's are 6 or 7 years old and are still selling for over 60+% of their original MSRP (yours for example). The 2001 is selling at around 60% and it's only 2 to 3 years old. That would concern me from a future sales perspective (only because I worry about such things!)
