i've only got eyes for 993's!!!
i'll stick with the 993! geez for me it's so nice to not be playing the "i want the newer model" game anymore. the 993 is a classic with modern features. 996's are plentyful & the dealers know it. salespeople constantly tell me they could sell beautiful cared for 993's all day long. too many 996's on the market & anything older that a 2002 has been slammed (resale-wise) partly because of the new engine & nose design (non-boxster) etc...
but as an artist/creative, i can also say the 993 is and will prove to one of the best automotive designs in history. i'm keeping mine & look forward to picking up a 97-98 TT next year. and as far as the 996... driven 'em... just not buying one... unfortunately the newer cars fails to hit that spot that the 993 does. ----> just doesn't have that "snap"
you know?
my 2¢.

Bill,
FWIW. I'd like to have a 996 because it is quieter. But then I have a used black car (which draws lots of complements). But your car is unique because of the rare color and a C4S (which everybody wants). Your first decision was the right decision. Your car is better than a (common) silver 996 and will be for some time to come IMHO.

A friend with a 996, probably a 2000, with a recently replaced transmission under Porsche warranty, has seen his car go into transmission death throws once again. He is going to try to get Porsche to replace the tranny under their very relaxed warranty.
Perhaps it is urban legend, but I hear over and over again about 996 cars having their engines and transmissions replaced by Porsche, under "warranty". If the legend is true, this cannot be good.
Me, I'll stick with my 282 HP 993...and hope the CEL doesn't come on for a while. The car burns almost 0 oil, hopefully a good sign. And when it is time for guides...I'll live with it.

Nota_Troll you are incorrect......it was the 2002 model year as Viken stated...sure you are not confusing the the Boxster motor changes and upgrades...with the 996

Having had several old shape 911,,,i was offered a good deal on a new 2002 996,,,
i took this up.the 996 particularly with the sports extras i had was a truly fantastic car....I just didn't need a GT car....I now drive a 993RS,
which i feel is more of a sportscar....
In many ways the 996 was a better car,,it just wasn't a keeper from my personal point of view, i would drive one to see if it suits what you want from a Porsche.

I drove the first vintage 996 when the dealer had a demo day when the car first came out. Was quieter, engine had great accelleration, handling MIGHT have been better than my 993. However, feel thru 'seat of the pants' and the steering feel I get in the 993 were all damepd out. Build quaility looked a lot cheaper as well.
I'll keep my 993 for now (it has only 76K miles so have a lot of life left). When I want a replacement I don't know what I'll do - get a 996TT or look for a 993 "S" model or TT.

I was in my local Stealer around when the Cayenne came out (for service of my car) and was talking to a salesman about the 993. I noticed he had none for sale. When I inquired as to why, he stated that he "could not make any money on them". There was not enough margin between wholesale and retail on a clean 993 to make it practical for him.
I thought that was an interesting point.

One car magazine (I think it was 911 & Porsche World) speculated that the 996 might belong to the "lost generation" a la the 964 (it was an article about buying used 964s for cheap in the UK). Only time will tell I guess.

Speaking of 993 values, has anyone been paying attention to resale on 996TTs compared to 993 TTs? They are now almost equal. That has to say something about the build quality of 996s... although I do know that they are improving all the time. I have seen a couple medium mile 2001 996 TTs go for the mid $70K-range, and this is not at auction. I think that the 993 prices have leveled off and may even improve. Keep your 993! It is the last of the hand-assembled cars. They may have a few minor issues, but they are still the best-built cars I have ever driven. I'll get off my soapbox now...

Indeed it was 2001-Oct 2001, maybe later in the states. Definitely 02 model year though.
