A very subjective topic. All Porsches are "supercars". However, IMHO, the CGT and the 959 are the only "exotics" from Porsche.

ABSOLUTELY A SUPERCAR.

At the time it was built. I think it was the fastest production car in the world?

Find another car with those kinda numbers under 200k.

Hi,

Just curious how you define what performance thresh-holds qualify a car as a supercar.

0-60 mph under 4 seconds? AND top speed above 190 mph?

I know the Mclaren F1, Enzo, Murceilego, Veryon, F550 etc. are generally accepted as supercars. I'm just wondering if there is a minimum performance level a car must achieve to qulaify as a supercar.

Would the 993tt qualify? the 996tt? Other examples?

I ran a Google search and nothing appropriate came up. Education please.

Thanks.

CP

PS This is my original post. The message board gremlins swiped the teaxt, so here it is again.

Thanks.

One of the car mags (C & D or R & T) did a test where the car's accelerated to 100 and then the brakes were applied to get the cars to stop asap. Outside of the Enzo, the 996TT was the clear winner. Based on your assumption of a car's performance, the 996TT would qualify.

However, IMHO, Porsche has produced too many 996TT's so they are not exclusive enough.

All Porsches are "supercars".

Errrr...... May be with the exception of Boxster and Cayenne? May be all turbos are supercars? I'm not even sure on that one.

The 993tt is most definitely a supercar. It has won the top class in Targa Tasmania (6 day road rally) pretty much every year that a 993tt has been entered, beating Lamborghinis, Ferraris, De Tomasos, Nissan GT-Rs, factory-backed rally cars, Cobras, etc.

As to a 'supercar formula', that's too hard but it should take into account acceleration, top speed, braking, handling, looks, imho. Sub 6 second 0-100 kph times could be enough if everything else is in place too.

Its weird that Porsche managed to build a car what is true supercar in spec and competitions.

BUT, it is driveable and usable as every-day car, what makes it somehow less super-car. Very weird. You have to build something very unusable and impractical to get 100% super-car status???!!!

Car Magazine defined their understanding of supercars in September Collector edition "The Ultimate Supercars". They are:

1. Lamborghini Miura
2. Ferrari 365GTB/4 Daytona
3. Lamborghini Countach
4. Porsche 911/964 Turbo
5. BMW M1 (have You ever heard?)
6. Ferrari F40
7. Porsche 959
8. Honda NSX
9. Jaguar XJ220
10. Bugatti EB110
11. McLaren F1
12. Pagani Zonda C12S
13. Ferrari Enzo
14. Porsche Carrera GT

As You see, these are the cars that inspired and changed the world at their time.

Hmmmm.....

Interesting that there's not one RUF on the list. You'd think the Yellow Bird should be there.

5. BMW M1 (have You ever heard?)
Who hasn't heard of the E26 with its handbuilt engine? An interesting fact, a variation of the same handbuilt engine can be found in "the Shark" - the beautifully sculpted M6.

EVO did a run down of affordable used supercars maybe 8 months ago, and sometime last year they did a segment on cars you should consider if you have a decent budget and would rather get something that will inspire you forever, instead of a new spirit-less car. I think it was called Timeless Beasts or something.

The two cars they chose? 993 TT and the P-1.

CP - hijackin' material? HA!!

How I define Supercar? I have know idea. Even though I think my 993 is a super car but I don't think it's a Supercar.

It's purely subjective.

CP, I agree. Every RUF model is a supercar, no question. There are many others missing from that list like the Koenigsegg CC (higher top speed than all the cars listed there), the top TVRs, Porsche 993tt and 996tt and many more.

Note that this is a list of ultimate supercars so exclusion from the list does not mean a car is not a supercar - this appears to be an attempt to come up with a list of what's at the top of the supercar rankings.

Anyway, it's just a silly magazine reporter's opinion

I think we are all a little jaded on this list. Compare any of our cars to the average family car, and the performance is in a different league. Isn't that what the term 'supercar' really means?

The only area where the Porsche turbos fall down as a supercar is in the "unreliability index". They are just way too nice as daily drivers and way too reliable to make the short list. Ferarri, on the other hand, are unreliable enough to top the list.

I'd like to define "Supercar" like that famous judge defined pornography -

"I knows it when I sees it"

911 Turbo = Supercar

I'd also say that the 911 has become less of a Supercar as the decades have gone by. To me, a Supercar is an uncompromising beast that can be tamed by only the best drivers. While the Turbo has gotten faster and faster, it has also gotten much more accessible to dorks like me. They make a Turbo Tiptronic fer cryin out loud.

RUF's cars still carry the aura of uncompromising beastliness. There is also an element of "twisted steel and sex appeal" that must be accounted for.

Supercar status depends on performance, but acceleration and speed aren't the sole criteria. Andy Granatelli once built a Chevy Caprice that did over 200mph with three journalists along for the ride. Fast land barge. NOT a supercar.

My two cents...
