New Key Heads
#18
Received my new key head, which is definitely LED. Purchased from the local dealer who had to order it. Date on the part tag is November 2014.
Opened my existing key and wonder if anyone knows what this "glass capsule" is that sits above the spring? Appears to have a wound copper wire inside. What purpose does it serve and do I need to transfer it to the new key head? TIA

I had moved it over to the new key head under the premise that it wouldn't be there if it wasn't needed.

This was interesting, I have never seen such a device in the 993 keys. As mentioned above, it is presumably a security chip.
As far as I know was no 993 factory equipped with a key recognition system. The Porsche Drive Block immobilizer rely on a RF transmitted signal from the key fob only, and there's no key transceiver circuitry in either the door or the ignition locks. However, this could be an aftermarket solution.
Cheers,
Tore
