[QUOTE=johnireland;11860513]Its also funny that the more I drive my 996 the less I become interested in selling or trading it. There is a Porsche tradition of it taking awhile for the owners of the older to accept the improvements of the newer.
QUOTE]

There is nothing wrong with enjoying your car.

There is also not a problem with people accepting anything. You came on here looking to see if someone wanted to trade. Nobody has stepped up.

When I was looking for something to go with my old '84, I looked at a few 996's while looking at 993's, and had a smile on my face when I test drove them, for sure. But, I just wasn't excited about owning one. Interior feel, exterior looks were deal breakers.

I'm pretty sure a 996 or later standard issue Carrera will never surpass an air-cooled variant in value, even taking into consideration "improvements".

Why can't we just all get along? After all they're both Porsches and both 911's for that matter. We should be embracing our cars not having discussions like these.

Nope.

And here's why:

When Porsche changed from making 356s to 911s, the change was evolutionary: still air cooled, still made in relatively small numbers from the same boutique automaker. Yes the shape changed, and cylinders were added, but still very similar in many respects.

Thing is, the leap from 993 to 996 and beyond was revolutionary. So big a leap, in fact, they are not the same car in almost any way.

Also, the 996/997/991 variants were/are made in huge production numbers. Of course they're also water cooled now, and we all know that a giant conglomerate, VW, makes Porsches now. Aside from the engine placement, Porsche is very similar to every other mass-produced car from any giant automaker that spits out hundreds of thousands of cars a year or more.

Aside from specialty editions, i.e. GT2, 4.0 997 GT3 etc., no 996 or 997 car will ever be collectible like the air-cooled models. There are just too many made. Porsche will suffer the same depreciation that every other automaker that makes so many cars does.

Too many cars to be highly collectible. Maybe in 50 years when most have been wrecked/destroyed. But not for a long, long time, if ever.

And Bingo again! Look at the steep depreciation rate already occurring on 991's. As many have mentioned these are not merely opinions of some forum members they are fact and proven in the marketplace everyday.

Turbo's should be broken out as separate category.

$199,999 is not the highest priced turbo. There is a low mileage C4S at that price though. Therefore I do believe turbos were not included in the numbers.

thanks Mongrelcat! The asking price data explains the demand trajectory pretty clearly. For roughly every 10 996's for sale... there is one 993 for sale and the asking price of the average 996 is roughly half the asking price of the average 993.

You left off eBay and Craigslist and the Pennysaver. Do not seek work as a statistician...unless it is for the federal government.
