Many of the comments remind me of when the 911 first came out and many 356 owners began having heart attacks because Porsche decided a new generation of car and technology was needed. Rarely heard the "new" 911 people dumping on the 356. Now we have people bent out of shape over the blasphemy that someone might suggest a 996 is worth as much as a 993 in a car for car comparison...and that the prices of both cars are in a period of extremes.

At a little get together today there was a very nice 993 C2S...and looking at it I realized I'm still interested in a trade and I'd throw some money into the pot for the right car. I would prefer to just deal with Southern California cars since that way both parties can do PPIs and take long test drives, etc.

As was mentioned, best to let this lie, and quit while you are "ahead". Your analogy below is absolutely ludicrous, and is textbook apples-oranges.

Instead of dealing with a new dramitcally different car being released, we have the benefit of history and facts in evaluating this comparison.

Since we're here;

I can tell you the names of two women who know absolutely nothing about cars or Porsches that will still tell you the 996 is the ugliest of them all.

Then I'd mention that the 996 base models have one of the worst motors Porsche ever put in a street car and possibly the cheapest, most dated looking interior they ever produced as well.

I can respect a 996 Turbo or GT3 as a cheap way to get a Mezger but the base 996 models are a joke.

lol, sense of irony too strong to resist... you have a 991? isn't that the new frumpy 928 replacement, luxo-barge that drives itself with the help of all those electronic aids? does yours have the automatic trans too?

Interesting compario would be:

1996 993 TURBO with 50k miles, or a 2004 996 TURBO with 50k miles.

Obviously we know which car is more collectable and has higher resale.
But is the 8 year newer 996 really the better and more modern car? and in what aspects? It could be argued that the 996 is indeed the better car on paper...

Absolutely. Period. Doesn't mean it's more desirable. (At this point we can count on one hand the number of 993 Turbo owners who have recently bought, and will use them for much more than Cars And Coffee conversation.)

I didn't think this thread was based on what car is faster, stops faster or turns better. Seems like it was based on the OP trying to value his NA 996 the same or similar as a 993 and make a trade.

You would probably have to throw some money into the pot since you are at a disadvantage trading position. 996s are still on the downtrend while 993s are on a white hot uptrend.

People rarely look at the prices today. They tend to look at the pricing trend when making comparison.

No, it's the way some of those opinions are expressed Akin to playground ridiculing. The op is entitled to his opinion whether it be right or wrong.

Its also funny that the more I drive my 996 the less I become interested in selling or trading it. There is a Porsche tradition of it taking awhile for the owners of the older to accept the improvements of the newer.

I think the 993 will takes its historical place as the best of the air cooled 911s, as the 356C was the peak of evolution in that generation of cars.

I think the water cooled cars, the 996 and 997, will become like the 356A and B...and maybe the 964. Who knows what the 991 and beyond will evolve into.
