Hi all,

I am considering a Porsche 993 Year 1997 with 34 K miles for ~USD48K.
Below are the service record entries. Please advise if:
- There is a big overhaul needed soon within 1 year, e.g., SAI issue.
- Was there anything expensive fixed in those years.
- Any worrying trend in the service record entries

Thank you for your help!

Seems like typical maintenance / service. SInce you already expect a big overhaul in a year to address SAI issue, that will find anything else "while you are in there". Before you pull that trigger, be sure to search the forum on al the SAI threads, some easy ways to possibly address that short of a top end overhaul.

At this point years more than miles/kilometers is the factor, I suspect it has oil seepage from various gaskets the "while yo are in there" can be addressed.

Service list has little insight to condition of body/paint/glass/interior/etc. Be sure to get a PPI from a good air cooled shop.

Kien_Ersatz,
Thanks for the advice on the SAI issue, the PPI, and info that the maintenance list fixed nothing major!

You are spot on about oil seepage! I noticed oil leaks on the floor after the dealer started the engine, and revved it.

I travelled 6 hours by bus to take a look at the car; the exterior/interior looks fine. I checked for common things listed by you guys and the buying guide here: http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/9...buy_guide.html.

I was an Xpat in Tokyo for 1 year and learned a little bit about Japanese when it comes to perfection. They are very very thorough and pay great attention to details. Owning a car in Tokyo is a luxury and unless you have a deep pocket, the parking cost would surpass that of maintenance. I would not hesitate on pulling a trigger if things check out ok. Japanese drives on the opposite side but I haven't seen any porsche with the steering wheel on the right side yet. It's something to consider if you want to bring it back to the states in the future.

This purchase should stop until you find out exactly why it's leaking oil and how much it will cost to fix. If oil dripped onto the floor in just the few minutes when the car was running, you're dealing with a serious oil leak.

NP993, P-daddy: I asked the Porsche center, and they mentioned that they can fix it for around USD2K as well as prep the car for road use. Thanks guys.

If they gave you a price quote for fixing the leak they should tell you what exactly is leaking....my guess is the rear main seal. It's the only thing that justifies a $2K price tag. At $48K, I hope this work is included in the price of the car.

Agree you should find out what is leaking first before you pay up.
