V-Belt Question
Decided to change out the V-Belts that have about 22K on them. I purchased the correct Porsche belts and have been following the write up from pcarworkshop. I put all the shims back in the same order as they were removed, cranked the car with the DME out to get the belts seated. I put the DME back in and started the car and the Alternator belt started smoking bad! I shut the car off , took the Alt belt back off and added another shim since more shims means less tension. Cranked her back up and no smoke but now a squealing sound.
Does one need to adjust the shims from belt change to belt change? How do you tell if you have the correct shim count for the cooling fan and alternator, is there something that I am missing on the adjustment?
Thanks in advance!

Did you make sure that awesome belt sensor was centered and rolling smoothly? When I did mine, I thought I damaged it. I was able to get in and use electronic cleaner/lube spray and get it to function correctly again. Lots of threads on this. Good luck

It happened to me last time and the issue was that I did not put the half pulleys on correctly so the belt could not sit properly and was rubbing against the pulley creating that smoke.
Make sure both halves are set correctly to form the pulley and support the belt evenly.
Mine was smoking so bad that I had to buy another belt once I figured out my mistake, and had to clean the pulley halves to remove the molten rubber.
Good Luck !!

Oke , remember that big washer in between the 2 pulleys . This allows the 2 belts to have different "speeds" ...it might be the case you have switched this ring around so it locks both pulley s so it can't have different "speeds"
Hope this helps .

Wunderbar got it right, I had the spacer reversed and now all good to go! Did not install the updated pulley. Now I know that if a belt ever breaks I will be good changing it on the road!

Doing a DIY 100K service at the moment on my car and ordered new belts....how can I tell an updated pulley from the original? If it's original is the update recommended? I haven't had any belt issues nor have there been any issues I can see from the previous owners records.

Take a look at this thread. It will show the differences between the updated vs. old style pulley's as well as a wealth of information from others on this topic.
