Default Updated alternator pulley

I'm about to change belts on my car and see that there is an updated pulley available for the alternator. What is the advantage and how can I tell if I already have it?

This was only on the 95's so you already have it. I however just ordered the update.

I have seen some 97's with the old multi piece pulley -- FYI. May want to check yours. The old pulley is a two piece, each half, the washer being the extra piece. You can see it easily without having to take anything apart.

+1 .... I've a pair of '96 engines, each OE with the old pulleys: another FIY - each motor ate one or more belts with the old design, witnessed by the 2" digested chunks of belts found inside after pulling fans and alternator.

One of the best mods for me was to toss the old pulley completely ( plus alternator hub/bearing and wacky belt sensor gizmo), and install the RS hub for the single belt set up .... one alternative you may want to investigate.

So I guess I was wrong? I thought this was 95 only that needed the update?

Chris and others,
My 1996 has the multi piece pulley also. I haven't had any belts break yet, but guessing it's just a matter of time. I've got the new parts, just waiting for some vacation time to install.
Glenn

Edit: Cactus, I'M not saying your wrong !
I think lots of 993s went out the factory before the problem was reported, and then many, prob the owners who went to a dealer for maintenance, had theirs updated. The few 993s that still have the multi piece hubs that pop up now and again prob haven't had a major belt eating problem or went to an independent mechanic who didn't have the TSBs in hand.
Just a guess.

Thanks for all the replies but I am still confused. I have seen an updated two piece pulley advertised. If it is not two piece then how do you adjust the belt tension? The RS option of a single belt seems worthwhile but I have new Porsche belts all set to go so for now I will stick with the stock setup. Here is my present pulley. What do I have?

Hey Chris,

You got a pic of both the old and updated to compare?

Just did my belts and update on Saturday! YAY!
My car only has 18K miles and it was the fan belt that had a tear halfway so I did all the belts.

I found the TSB that describes the pulley update and have included it. The update is made "in case of alternator belt failure or belt noises". The new pulley half has the spacer built into it instead of the separate piece used on the outside of each half of the original version.

The pulley shown in my above photo is the new version as Chris points out because you can see the shoulder on it next to the nut. Shims are still used to adjust belt tension but extras are not stored outside the pulley. For turbos a different belt is used as well.

Chris....now I understand when you said that each half of the new pulley is 1 piece instead of 2.

Default pulley update?

Do all updated pulleys look the same? ... because mine looks somewhat
different. I don't know 100% if I have the updated pulley, but I DO see two pieces.

I believe that is the original version. You can see the 2 pieces with extra shims between them. My understanding is that the new pulley half is only the 1 piece design. PN for the new version is 993 106 268 01 (2 req'd).

The TSB asks one to use a 757mm belt -- I have found this not to work as the 760mm belt fits as it should, deep, but as it should. The 757mm belt, IMO, is way too short.
