Default Mirrors Stolen

I woke up to find my car more aerodynamic, someone had stolen my mirrors during the night.

Anyone know of a good source for these, used or new. Or does anyone have a set laying around they want to sell?

There is a guy up here in Nor. Cal. who is trying to selling a pair on Craigslist. He's had them listed for quite a while: http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/pts/4352976443.html

Holy crap, your kidding, right? Did they remove them using the screws so they knew what they were doing? Is the car damaged??

Is the car insured, or the deductible is not worth it?

Cheers,

Mike

It would be nice to use anti-tamper Torx screws, or regular Torx screws for the mirrors.

I have not been able to find a source for a metric 5 X 35 Torx screw of either type, has anyone else?

Thanks Spyder, I’ll check it out right now. Oop just did, I can get a set for $450 ( a little cheaper than the Craig's list ad) here in town at LAPD. Maybe I should just go for that. Thanks though.

Hi Mike, yeah it was totally weak. In a nice neighborhood too. They took one off pretty well, only scratching the paint to a point that I think it can be buffed out. That was away from the street in the driveway. The driver’s side was facing the street and more visible. They obviously did that one faster and didn’t get the bolt all the way loose before they took it off, and it seems they pulled it back and forth before they got it off and damaged the door around the mirrors. They also messed up a few other things while they were at it.

My deductible is $500 so it’s worth it to have it done, especially cuz they may have to do some painting. It will be in the shop for a few days so while I’m doing this I was thinking of having the bumper resprayed…

….of course I started looking into turbo bumpers and splitters… this Duraflex stuff, does the bumper flex enough for it to sustain damage close to urethane? I’ll probably end up sticking with the factory bumper, maybe shaving the bumperettes, but the price of the Duraflex turbo bumper is so cheap. See: http://www.duraflexbodykits.com/1996...front-bumpers/

Edit: wow there are a lot of threads on this... maybe Ill just stay stock

I too was thinking of some anti-tamper torx, theses: http://www.secufast.com/images/Galle...0met%20bit.jpg
But then I thought, if some loser who knows how to get the mirrors off comes up to my car and runs into those he will probably try to pry them off or just get pissed and do more damage.

Sorry to hear that. This is where interchangeability with older models comes into play. Many 993 parts are very desirable.

Reminds me of how Integra Type R's were often stolen and/or stripped for parts because many of their parts were desired by Honda Civic and Acura Integra owners.

Sorry to hear that, nothing is more violating than having your car vandalized! Make your blood boil.

This is commonplace in UK and scums sell it on eBay!

That sucks. You should check all registered 964 owners in the area...

Sad this has to be a consideration as well. Still, I will use them because I would hope the bastard would go on his way when they didn't come off easily. Also, I will do almost anything to try to make crime not pay.

If Craiglist, Rennlist, EBay etc. could refuse to take these items as up for sale it would go a long way toward stopping the crime, but spotting the ads would be hard to do.

Welcome to the world of having desirable mirrors. I've had a couple E36 M3s and the mirrors from those cars are frequently stolen and sold on ebay. Sorry to hear about the theft. Going to Torx bolts will add another layer of security and deter some thefts. But if someone is determined to get the mirrors, there's nothing you can really do.

One can only be hopeful that the thief will not go to the lengths of damaging the mirror to the extent it is worthless for sale or to make so much noise and commotion to draw attention to their act.

Check your local Stihl dealer/service center for either 9022 341 1080 or 9022 341 1081. Both are M5x35 TORX but with slightly different thread lengths.
