Default YAER (yet another engine rebuild)

So, I have finally got around to starting my engine rebuild. Seems like there are a few of us going through this right now! You might remember me from the "Unknown Part found during oil change" thread. The end all was that the part was from the power steering pump bracket and was dropped into the upper right valve cover by me when I replaced the valve cover. Since the car has 150k and is up for a new clutch soon, I decided to do everything all at once.

So, rebuild menu is as follows:

1. Transmission will be re-geared. Using new RS 1st gear shaft, moving 5th -> 6th, filling out others with Porsche gear sets.
2. New Drexler diff will be going in when the tranny is rebuilt.
3. RS flywheel.
4. Heads getting RS valves + all other goodies.
5. Switching to RS cams, having ECU modified.
6. Keeping stock rods, will get new APR bolts + bushings + bearings
7. SAE pump will go away -- benefit of having a '95
8. AC will go away -- benefit of living in Seattle.
9. Few other misc - like solid rear subframe mounts.

Plan is to not tear into the bottom unless something looks bad after pistons / cylinders are off.

I'll post bits and pieces as the task unfolds (and perhaps a few questions :-)

Started yesterday evening, engine is now out:

Makes me want to drop my engine too just for the hell of it, if I knew how. Lol!

Most Excellent.

Been there...Done that. Seems you are taking the same route (regear,RS cams and RS valves with a tune) You are going to love this set up. I am currently seating the rings. I have a little over 500 miles on the engine, and boy is it fun to drive

Steve can balance your clutch and pressure plate as well.

Always fun to watch another enthusiast, although you have a much nicer and cleaner garage.

Hi Reiner,

I'd kindly suggest doing a leakdown test before you disassemble the engine to give you a "snapshot" of ring sealing.

No matter what, your pistons should be carefully measured for ring land wear since thats what the 'go, no-go' decision is based on.

4. Heads getting RS valves + all other goodies.
Can you still buy RS valves? I assume all other goodies are RS springs or a head rework?

I was planning on dropping off the pistons and cylinders to a good local machine shop, and have them clean and then measure everything. Do you think a leakdown test would provide additional information that would inform the decision to keep them beyond just measuring them?

The machine shop I was planning on using also has the proper stone to do a plateau hone, which I wanted to have done to help the new rings seat.

Also, the ECU is coming to you - I just haven't gotten around to calling you yet

If all goes according to plan, I'll drop it off when I am in PDX at the beginning of next month.

Love that garage setup!

Who will be doing the work on the transmission?

Yes you can, however they are not inexpensive. The seats need to be cut especially for these larger intake valves.

It cannot hurt.

The machine shop I was planning on using also has the proper stone to do a plateau hone, which I wanted to have done to help the new rings seat.
I'm VERY careful & cautious about honing Nikasil cylinders as this process removes metal which is something that enlarges ring gaps & piston clearances (not desirable). If you elect to do this, make sure they use diamond stones. In many cases, a thorough de-glaze job is all thats needed to help new rings to seat. Naturally, consult your engine builder for advice & guidance on this.

Sounds fine.
