Rebuilding my engine this week...

I have been humbled by rod bolts, or my ignorance of them. Every 911 motor I've had apart, all you did to get the rod bolts out of the end caps was tap them out with a mallet. I had no reason to think 993's would be any different. Didn't waste too much time trying to get them out, but tomorrow AM I'll have to make a trip to the machine shop to have them pressed out and the ARP's pressed in. So no case assembly tonight, but no real delay -- needed another day of cleaning and prepping parts, the worst part of any rebuild. Case halves, cam housings, etc, are all ready for assembly. I also put the rings on the pistons and began mods to the Varioram manifold.
Build details: 3.8L using lighter, more modern Carillo pistons; 9M heads and cams; 964 mechanical rockers; and 100-cell cats. I wanted more power but also wanted to keep my 993. This struck me as the best way to do it.

Nice work, and quick! Your existing pistons and valves look extraordinarily clean - this car have a lot of highway miles?
I assume the mains were good as usual - I have also seen that sort of wear on the layshaft, like you said it's typical. You going to polish the crankshaft or leave it? How about windage (like boat-tailing, etc..).
Anyways, fun to follow, please keep posting!
Cheers,
Mike
