My tranny made need some TLC (synchros), and am thinking seriously about a re-gear. The thing I like least about the 993 are the wide spaces between gears, especially 1st to 2nd.
The main questions is if this is something you've done, what did you choose for 6th gear? If you moved 5th to 6th, do you find 6th tall enough for interstate cruising? If not, what did you choose for 6th, and do you find it's working well?
My car is for street only, mostly on rural secondary roads, but with some highway cruising as well. I do not intend on tracking it.
Thanks!

Go out on the highway and drive for a while at 75-80 MPH in 5th and see if you find it too short. I certainly do. I left 6th stock and replaced 3, 4, and 5 with RS ratios. Perfect gearbox now.

It doesn't bother me, or at least not nearly enough to want to spend the enormous amount of money required to deal with this aspect of a re-gear. I almost never floor it in first, so who cares?
I can't think of a single aspect of this, BTW, that hasn't been covered ten times in the archives....

I have not done a regear, but it appears you have to give up something besides the best part of 5 digits to get closer gears. Most on the board who have done it seem to sacrifice 6th, putting stock 5th in its place. NP is one a the few who dropped stock 5th and kept stock 6th. If I did it, I absolutely would do it this way as my stock 5th is my least used gear whereas my stock 6th is used a lot on highways. I also am not bothered about 1/2. All my 'fun' driving is 2/3/4 shifts.

There's no right or wrong way to do it. It's all a matter of how much you want to spend to achieve X result. If X result for you requires a taller first gear, then be prepared to spend around triple what it costs to swap out 3, 4, and 5. For me, it wasn't worth it, but for you it might be. Different strokes, etc.

Because you have a '95 993 there is a chance that you have the removable 2nd gear. If you are lucky and have this, then you can easily change out 2nd gear when you do the rest of the stack. If you don't have the removable gear it can still be done but adds a bit more $$$.
When I was contemplating a re-gear I referenced many of the threads already on this subject and wanted to change gears 2-5, leaving 6th alone for hwy cruising. Budget ended up winning out and I am still stock, but content. It's not a cheap endeavor!

Here's a typical regear where 5 was moved to 6 compared to stock w/ the same engine, 1 is the same in both, 2-4 were all lowered to fit nicely between 1 and 6(old 5)
fotr this engine 5 and 6 could stand to be a little taller as the tail where 4 crosses 5 and 5 crosses 6, is leaving torque on the table that could be used for acceleration

Here is the same engine w/ what I think are among the best setups for these engines stock
/21 was used in early RoW 993, /32 was used in the RS/CS, the taller 1 in the /32 is really nice w/ a 3.8 and still an improvement on the /20 w a 3.6, in these boxes all the gears are useable where the /20 I found 6 to be almost useless
