Just saw some recent 993 prices and holy crap! What sort of mass hysteria is going on right now? It doesn't tempt me to sell, of course. I can't see how it's sustainable, since 997 and 996 GT3 prices will be closing in.

My guess is it is nostalgia, and many magazines did a 50 year piece created heightened awareness. They are terrific cars but certainly not rare in collector car terms. 25 year old people are not seeking these out at the same rate as 50+ year old.

So yes, they can fall. I remember when model T fords were valuable. Now that most people that have a model T memory are gone, the price plummeted.
Another thought has emerged, which is a 993 is much more fun than stocks of equal value, so many are "investing" in more tangible asset that has personal interest to them.
For everyone's sake, I hope prices stay high, but that may not be the end result.

The great thing is we don't need to speculate.

Look at 356 and early 911 prices. Where have they gone?

In due time, the 993 will follow. It is the last of the air-cooled cars ever made. That alone will ensure it's collectibilty in years/decades to come.

Selling is one thing, what has to be considered is rising values changing the way you use the car.

Only taking it out on dry sunny days, even more careful where you park , if you ever leave it, that is.

With increased value comes increased insurance excess on trackdays, even with an accident free clean licence, my excess was the same price as the Elise I bought...so no more 993 on track!

So, in some respects be careful of rising prices as it can change how you enjoy your 993.

Houses were still being built. Not saying that the air cooled cars will level off or dip in value but long term ownership will see values higher not adjusted for inflation.

collectible car prices are almost always based on nostalgia and, if not that, very low production numbers - Ford GT and CGT come to mind as newer examples. there's nothing surprising going on here - our cars are getting older, there weren't 1 million made and people love them. that's an equation for success. people keep mentioning the 356 and 911 markets, the 993 is falling into place behind them (maybe just a tad early). enjoy it.

The second sentence didn't stick in relation to the first? I've been on the SS Porsche since 1980. But if you can list the number of Hondas (save the S2000 and NSX......and the odd factory or subcontracted race car) that I could do with what I do, I'm all ears.

Anyway, a Honda minivan sitting over next to my vending machines at the local dealer has a sticker of ~$45K. The 996 Turbo, while a slightly wounded bird that I'll have to work on a bit sometime down the road, was $10K less.........

IMHO, this forum spends far too much time worrying about this and not enough time enjoying these cars as they were intended. Part of the fun of owning a 993 is the community. I'd much rather hang around enthusiasts than investors.

Honestly, I'd like 993 prices to tank because I'd buy 1 or 2 more.

I don't think this is an issue at all, with the forum. Maybe some individuals, and more precisely, those that have bought recently. But, not a forum-wide issue at all.

In all seriousness.........and of course due respect, I do believe most here DO enjoy their cars the way they were intended. I for one enjoyed the hell out of mine on track for five years before I retried it
For those of us who have been here for many years, it's probably widely known that all the issues have been discussed ad-nausium and so now we like to discuss how well we've done with our purchases and how lucky we are to still own them and enjoy them. Just my .002 cents (adjusted for inflation)

Issue? No, I wouldn't say it's an issue per se. However, these "investment" type of threads have become more common over time. I love reading about the rennlist meets and I even attended my first one last Summer. I hope folks don't miss out on these events because they're afraid of devaluing their car by putting miles on it.
