Cost of getting new hydraulic lifters...
After talking it over with Steve Weiner (thank you Steve ), I have decided to go ahead and get new hydraulic lifters.
Question to those of you who had them changed: how much did you pay? Thanks and Merry Christmas...

You want labor costs or parts costs? Porsche parts or third party? Exhaust only, or the entire set? Do yuo need new valve cover gaskets? All these can vary it quite a bit.
As for replacement, the procedure is simple but does take time. Each valve cover needs to be removed, and the engine rotated to offload each rocker, and the rocker removed/lifter changed/installed and torqued, and then the valve cover put back on.
To do an entire NA engine, top and bottom, should be 4-6 hours of work I think, or at least that is how long it would take me. Not sure what a shop would actually charge, you know how long it really takes and what they charge are often not related...
Parts seem to vary from under $30/lifter to over $75, depending on sources and if sales are on. You need 12 for the entire engine - only other parts are new gaskets for the valve covers, and perhaps new bolts if you want them and the existing ones are really corroded.
Cheers,
Mike

Mike, my mechanic is going to replace my hydraulic lifters. So I want to know overall cost of having it done. Just wondering what garages in the States are charging...

I would think your mechanic would give the best answer for time charge. Mike summed it up pretty good. I think from the dealer they were $75 a lifter, and it took me a couple hours to install everything, but Steve installed new lifters when he resurfaced the rockers. :thumb up:

The question I'd have is: do you need any other work done, or just lifters? They're a lot easier to get to with engine out, and if you had more than one need-could justify a drop.

Its like my subscription to Men's Health. After about a year I realized they were addressing the exact same problems over and over again. There's not really anything new, just people talking.
