Rear Seat Delete - Anyone fabricate a facsimile?
Looking for a RSD for my 993 and of course it's a hard item to find. And I don't really need the storage compartments. I keep my rear seats down all the time and do use the shelf for soft luggage.
I've seen a few fabricated ones where people have used 2 simple pieces of plywood, with lip, covered with OEM carpet. Looked like a great solution. I've also seen what was called an "RS" RSD that had openings where doors would go, but a reduced framework (photo attached). I've also heard of using a 996 RSD and trimming it to fit (photo). Just looking for the simplest OEM quality solution.
I'm wondering if anyone has a template and / or has fabricated a plywood RSD. I'd love to just buy a plug and play one if possible.
Thanks,
Ron

I gave the top template to Andreas when I was done. I basically bought a trashed unit from an RSA and rebuilt it from the ground up. Search for my thread on it.

All we need is some advancement in large format home 3D printing machines! I made a fiberglass mold of the front of my unit before I recovered it. Someday I might do something with it!

Now that's what I was looking for :-) I would love to get a "RSD Light" that only has the "L" with a lip to prevent things from sliding into the seats. And then either no opening or just a carpeted set of rectangular openings so you could slip small items in and they won't move around (ie: umbrella, flashlight, liter of oil, warning triangle, etc. - all those small things you want to have with you but don't want rolling around in the boot).

Thinking about this whole project again, if I were to ever have mine apart again, I think I could build a replica that gives 95% of the look for much less than they go for online. Not sure the market would be there though for the effort.

I think there is enough interest (including me) to warrant the 993 community pooling our mindshare, effort and resources to come up with the bits required to create CAD files of the major parts that comprise the main RSD compartment sans the accouterments. I agree that a no-frills version would be ideal: basic compartment, covered, and openings with a lip to keep stuff from flying around. No moving parts, just simple and elegant. Give everyone the option of covering it with your material of choice. Anyone willing to volunteer their RSD to create the templates? If we can open source this project,, it could benefit many.

Ditto Busta's thoughts. When I look at the basic item, it's 1 piece of plywood for the top, 1 short piece for the front with 2 ovals or rectangles cut out, 1 trim piece as a top lip, and 1 support piece in the center. $50 in materials tops and everyone trims / carpets as they like.

The basic design that you are talking about would be easy as taking a poop. I bought 3 yards of silverknit carpet for about $110 from GAHH that was a perfect match. If however you want the complete package with the doors...good luck. Like i said in my rebuild thread it is more complicated than you would think it should be.

The irony is that I want the fixed shelf (instead of seats that are always down) for the look and function. The weight savings, if any, are secondary. And to do just a shelf with 2 cut-outs to allow access instead of doors only goes further to make it lighter.
