Default Can recommend shops in Northern Colorado or Denver

If you need to know three or four good 993 shops in the Northern Colorado or Denver area you could PM me and I could give you a list with their plusses and minuses.

I know of no good options in Greeley however.

I agree 99% with the philosophy.

I might make an exception for a well documented, well known Rennlister car, but I would still have an independent PPI done.
I nearly bought a car from Atlanta as my first 993. Couldn't bring myself to do it. For one, there are simply way too many Porsches in the Los Angeles area to not find one here.

Perhaps arr0gant is an appropriate user name. I would not recommend "practically screaming" at any qualified Porsche mechanic in NY. You might wind up in a "boating accident".

How does one arrange for a PPI on a car they bought, get an estimate to fix an oil leak for $4k, and NOT ask for pics or specifics on what was/is wrong, and what $4k is going to get you in repairs? And then post here asking for opinions, when we certainly don't know any more than you?

I'd also hope that the seller doesn't come here and see that you even mentioned considering letting him work out the ransom. Maybe I misread or misunderstood your post, but that was my interpretation.

$4000 oil leak?
My understanding is the most expensive oil leak would be the seal around the main bearing behind the clutch. Not a $4000, more like a $1500 to $2000 including a new clutch while the transmission out. If the clutch is good should just be labor $600.
On the 993 you do not have to take the engine out to get to the flywheel side of the engine unlike the older 911.

I'd also expect a call if 4k worth of expense was found by the "qualified" Porsche mechanic, on the initial test before proceeding with more tests.

Glad I don't own a Porsche in NY. Scary.

Ok.
So car goes in for ppi.
Garage finds the car to have suffered a serious accident and badly repaired.
Should the garage proceed with a leak down test?
Thoughts?

Nobody can answer that, not knowing the discussion the new buyer has with the PPI mechanic. My guess is there was little communication on expectations here, if details on the $4k estimate were not requested or discussed.

You 'd be lucky if they found it at some places. Unless it was really badly repaired enough that you could tell. Otherwise they may notice the new paint. Chances are if you signed up for "PPI" with no known terms you could get anything or worse, nothing useful. If you signed up for mechanical inspection over including compression and leak down you should get that with the numbers in writing at the very least. You should be specific and then you can hold them to it. Dont settle for "yeah, yeah we do that on the PPI" or you'll later get "Oh we didnt write it down but it was good".
If you say stop at the first major issue then you may also want to specify the order of the PPI. $300 Compression and leak down last. The shop could say they did that first and then noticed the damage. You never know. If you dont know what you're looking at then I would suggest you drive it by a body shop separate from the mechanical shop.

So your confirming what I've always thought. You cannot trust a ppi to help you buy a car long distance, without viewing it yourself first. Well I would never.

We can't judge the op without knowing what was agreed between him and the garage.
