Dumb question about air cooled engine
I was wondering does the rain water effect the engine or damage it? I can't keep the car garaged and I was wondering since the engine is always exposed is that bad? Thanks

I'd worry more about the body & paint if I couldn't garage my car!

Even though much of the engine is exposed, there are drain holes, water management and dirt/dust debris considered in the design. Corrosion would be my concern too. Not just the body, but simple things like pulleys, bolts, etc. But when you thin about it, these were made to run all year- salty snowy roads, wet European springs..it all depends on your ability to maintain. Naturally, you will be more likely to spend more on plug wires, belts, filters, etc if you park out in the elements full time. Special attention may be needed in certian parts of the body. Keep clean and waxed and you should be okay.

I'd also be concerned about the metal bits starting to look shabby over time, and what the interior will look like with constant exposure. I saw a couple of SoCal cars that spent a lot of time outside, when I was shopping, and their motors looked like hell. We aren't known for corrosion around here either.

It's definitely better to garage any car than not garage it, but 993 engines are no more exposed to rain and elements than any other car. Anytime you drive in the rain in any car, all kinds of moisture is blown into the engine compartment. Similarly, extramely dry conditions cause dust and dirt to accumulate. Unless you want to maintain a garage queen without the benefit of a garage, quit worrying about it and drive the car. You can always clean it up, and doing so gives you an excuse to fiddle with your car.
