Henry Schmidt at Supertec Performance via Pelican Forms:

Case sealing suggestions : This is how we build all of our engines.

Outer case halves perimeter : Threebond 1104

Bearing web surfaces: Loctite 574

#8 Bearing O-Ring: Threebond 1211

Case Thru Bolts: Dow Corning 55 on Green Viton O-Rings

Flywheel Seal: dry

Front pulley Seal: dry

Intermediate Shaft Cover to Case: o-ring Dow 55, gasket style 574

Oil Breather Cover to Case: Loctite 574

Cylinders to Case: Curil T

Cam Towers to Cylinder Heads: Threebond 1104

Cam Chain Housings to Case: gaskets Loctite 574

Cam Chain Housings to Cam Towers: gasket Loctite 574

Cam Chain Housing Cover to Cam Chain Housing: Gasket Loctite574

Gaskets: Thin coat of Loctite 574

The Loctite Hysol is a perfect epoxy for sealing galley plugs and tensioner pins.
On late 3.0 & 3.2 cases it also seals the exposed oil tranfer tube in front of the cooler.

If you can't find 1104 use 1194 and Dow 55 can be replaced with 111

From memory that location on my case is a through bolt and nut rather than a stud.

It's definitely a stud, here is a pic. The threaded portion does not have an opening underneath for a through bolt. Mystery continues...

Stud 35 in your previous diagram is at the pulley end of the case. The above pic is at the crankend of the case.

I will have a look when I get home and measure the PL for you, as I did't need to pull that stud when I sent my case to ollies.

You are correct. My bad. What threw me was that the stud is the only one that's installed on the left side. Also, it is longer than the other perimeter studs. So, mystery solved. I believe the PL is 32mm but if you could check I would be grateful.

Thanks, Peter

Not an expert here on 993 cranks, but is it normal to have those gaps between the rod caps and the rods.

The motors i am familiar with dont have gaps there.

All engines need some for of clearance, this is where the very thin layer of oil forms to provide lubrication. Without clearance you either get no oil or the thing wont rotate.

Good eyeballs. I agree... there are some HUGE gaps between the rod and the rod caps. Unless its another optical contusion, something is wrong there. The caps should be tight to the rods. The bearings provide the clearance for proper oiling.

Looks like maybe the rods are only finger-tight on the crank....

My bad, I was reading caps but thinking bearings. Looks like Peter hasn't torqued yet

You guys had me scared for a second. The rod bolts are indeed torqued down. It is an illusion. What you are seeing is the squeezed out ARP lube (black).

From reading Wayne's rebuild book, in general, the acceptable clearance is between .03mm to .08mm with most coming in at around .05. Of course this is for model years up to 89. Does anyone know if this spec is the same for 964/993?

I am very glad this issue came up because it made me wonder, "why is there lube on the mating surface?" For some reason I thought the lube should be there. Wrong. I called ARP just to confirm. They said the width of the lube, while small, would increase the clearance dimension. So, i will take it apart, clean and re-torque.
