A failed thermostat definitely shortens an engine life. Mine caused my valve guide to go bad in a very short time even after replacing the thermostat.
How do these internals fail? Does the spring loose compression, tension. Can someone explain how this works? I had assumed heat would cause things to expand thus moving the plunger but I'm not sure.

I have another thermostat with only 51K on it. Perhaps I will use internals from that one.

Answered my own question. Since I have this apart I'm gonna replace the springs, regulator and o-ring, It seems the springs are the most likely to fail. Cheap insurance.

What cleaning fluid are you using in your parts cleaner?

My cleaning routine is:

1. Parts Washer
2. Cold water rinse.
3. Very hot soapy water clean, rinse.
4. Compressed air.
5. Alcohol/carb cleaner w/ kimtech wipes (prior to assembly).

Perfect, thanks.

I got lazy and sent all the hard parts (cam towers, case etc) off to Ollies for cleaning. I will do the final glory clean myself

Honestly, no. Not in the cam towers but the particles might be so small that I can't see them. I will take a magnet and see what I can pick up in the parts washer.

I remember there was some grey mystery sludge in the case. Hopefully, Ollies will get everything out with the hot tank.

Emerald, what's the mileage on your engine? Did you notice any fretting on your case mating surfaces?
