AZ targa^
Seal the hole with some silicone. Just extra prevention so no water and debris gets in and fouls it up.

Many thanks to Jlbarnett for bringing the tie rod pinning jig to Raleigh!
AZ Targa, just an observation, but I pinned mine closer to the other end of the tie rod, more near the roundish end, closer to the edge of the boot. Maybe it was in the positioning of the jig on the tie rod? Just posting another data point.
And I too used black silicone to seal them up.
EDIT: I think placement matters in that you need to be able to screw the rod in and out for an alignment....not sure if the pin will interfere with the threads if you need to move the rod in?

It certainly does matter. From the looks of it AZTarga pinned through the actual rod of the outer tie rod. This is why it is stated previously to measure and drill 50mm from the outer edge.
Now in the future when the car needs an alignment and adjusting (screwing in or out) the shaft is locked into position. He will either need to buy a new tie rod or run the car without proper alignment
*edit: it appears he placed the jig on the tie rod backwards (the large 5/16 hole on the jig should be towards the middle of the car)

Crap I definitely missed that instruction, I saw one of the previous photos of where to place the jig but now it looks like the jig was in place for the small hole to pre-drill the hole. Well I guess it's not a big deal since the tie rod's rubber is in pretty poor shape and will need to be replaced soon anyways. Live and learn.
I'll add some instructions to the jig so it doesn't happen again.

Some guy said in post #217 ......
It should now approximate the original jig - will try to link to that LINK. Slap it on with a hose clamp, and run your 5/32 pilot through the inner tie rod - yes, drill 19mm inboard from the rack side: your alignment guy will charge extra if you happen to drill & pin the outer rod half ...

I have the jig now but it will take a couple of days before I can be finished with it. I intend to ship it next week to Marin S4.

For those looking for instructions -
Best to turn the wheels all the way in the opposite direction of the side you are doing with the steering locked.
If you set the edge of the tool up to the boot it is practically exactly 50mm from the outer end.
Drill the pilot hole, then flip the tool around.
I set the smaller drill bit in the tie rod hole just drilled & then centered the tools bigger hole over the drill bit & set the thumb screws.
Drill the bigger hole, hammer in the roll-pin, seal it and you are done.
You will probably spend more time washing your car then pinning your tie rods :-)
Thanks,
Dave
