I was going to buy a RS6, or a RS4, but after driving them and then a E60 M5 (V10), the BMW was far superior IMHO, and I got that instead.

I'll also go with what Mike J said, the Audi is hard to shift smoothly, and the suspension is a bit on the crashy side. But MAN does it GO!

Here's the only photo I have of the two together.. which reminds me that I should take a few more.

1996 Polar Silver / Black Carrera 4S
Mods:
  • Euro Front Bumper
  • Turbo S Ducts
  • 3 Spoke steering wheel
  • Bilstiein / M030 Suspenion
  • Walrod bushings
  • Fister Golden Shift Rod
  • 996 CD Stereo
  • Aluminum Shifter and Handbrake
  • Custom Mounted Valentine1
  • RS motor mounts
  • RS Pulley
  • Powder coated fan shroud and fan
  • Fister Stage 3 Exhaust
  • Wide Ovals
  • Roock Wheels
  • … probably a few more mods I don't recall at the moment.

2007 Avus Silver / Black RS4
Mods:
  • Milltek Exhaust
  • Larger Sway bars (front and back)
  • .. there's not much else to do on this car unfortunately.
I feel incredibly lucky to get to choose between these two...

I have a similar combo

Hard to beat the S4 as a dd.

Thinking about consolidation....

No car is perfect, so I think the RS4's weak spot is gas mileage - 12mpg in the city is not stellar, and if the car is used a lot, it can become expensive. That mileage is Turbo territory!

Cheers,

Mike

So far the mileage on the RS4 is better than my old B7 S4! Not great but not too bad either!

Agree w/ earlier comments on shifting (would add sticky clutch pedal when driven hard as well as pedals not set up to heel toe), but that's about it. If I keep her will probably add an ECU tune and maybe GMG exhaust (to better hear that glorious V8!). Otherwise, very perfect out of the box. Here are some pics:

I almost bought an RS4 instead of the 993, does that count?

I would kill for an RS4 Avant.

The only reason I bought the RS4 as my DD is because I work from home. I rarely do long trips in it and my gas mileage is no doubt around 12 mpg around town.

I don't think the car is expensive if used a lot though. Unless you are talking carbon cleaning every 10K miles. But that can be done for $700.

Edit -- now that I have the 993 that may become the DD during the warm weather months and the RS4 only for the winter fun.

All I can say it mileage aside the RS4 high revving engine sounds great every morning as I drive to get my coffee. The car is built like a tank and very fun to drive. I did not drive either the RS4 or the 993 prior to buying them. I can say my first drive in the RS4 put more smiles on my face than the 993. I will have to put more time in the 993 to give it a fair comparison.
