personal opinion but the 964 feels better built to me, i prefer the 5 speed also for some strange reason. The 993 seems to handle better but really at the end of the day a 964 with PSS10's and ecu remap will prob feel a lot better than a stock 993. With so much available to change and modify it almost comes down to which one you prefer the look of. I still cant decide and thankfully dont have to.

Best to compare apples to apples -> put a 993 with PSS10's and ECU remap side by side with a 964 with the exactly the same mods.

Funny how each generation's owners say that the next generation is not built as well, or does not have the hewn from granite feeling.

They are both great cars, so it may come down to looks -> the 964 is the last of the classic fender styles, so if that is a key feature that looks "911" then that car is for you, personally I prefer the more modern looking sloped headlights and integrated bumpers, and especially the wide flare rear of my Turbo. The lines are less cluttered on the 993 between the body panels and the bumpers.

Personal choice is really the key here!

Cheers,

Mike

I might end up selling the 964 prior to really getting a fair chance to know both of them well side by side. There is one guy interested in it and if he does not pull the trigger I am going to start working on the engine oil leaks/give it a tune up/get some things powder coated while at it.

I like the Midnight Blue (964) better than the Arena Red (993). The MB is a very pretty color...just looks sweet.

If the 964 is not gone this week. I will be at it next weekend. Will not touch the 993 as far as mods until this one is further along.

If the 964 is gone this week...then I am going to do the following on the 993 1) new suspension, 2) get entire front end resprayed and 3) maybe a new set of wheels/tires. The 993 is in very good overall condition as it should be since it only has 58K miles on it.

What would make the 993 suspension squeak? shocks and/or bushings...what should I think about replacing? Plus I would like to see the car lowered to a nicer height.

Totally agree with this point but i was just saying that due to the mods done on so many of these cars these days that no fair comparison is possible until you actually do nail down the mods each has.

I have 964's and 993 so none of my opinions have anything to do with model owner loyalty. I might be wrong but wasnt the 964 the last 911 to be hand built? not saying its better, just curious.

I think u are right and it does come down to looks.. and i still cant make my mind up there either so maybe i'll decide based on engine.. and the 993 varioram 3.6 is better than the 964 3.6.. nope still cant decide. whichever one makes u smile most wins and today i spent the whole day traveling between family in a 993 so hence it wins.. for now.

i do think the 964 seems like a more solidly built car even just in how solid the doors feel when closed. i am going to have to go out and open and close them a few times but I really think the 964 seems more solid overall.

Ok, but again, it depends on the state of the hinges, seals, door latch, lock, door alignment, lubrication -> all these I have seen impact the way the door feels on closing. Two 993's side by side can have a completely different feel (I have done the side by side comparison). My friends 964 feels the same as my Turbo, but I remember my 83SC felt more solid than either the 964 or 993 (from a door perspective).

One thing I do not know is sheet metal thickness and density of steel used -> its possible that the 993 is made of thinner metals. I do know on my 83SC, the hood for instance was much stiffer than on my 993. However, I would have to research when the various changes happened.

Cheers,

Mike

its def heading off topic but would love to know a Porsche engineer from the 90's view on build quality from one model to the next. Difference in methods and materials. One thing i think we can agree on is that its not often than any 911 feels the same even if the same model, so many variables will affect this. Probably the 993 is the better car if it was science. I still dont know which way i would fall if i was forced to pick one. Prob the 993 c2s i guess. actually scratch that, i couldn't live without my 76 930. yep im totally lost.

"Hand-built" is a little misnomer - the last Porsche to have fenders beaten from rough metal by mallet was probably the 356 ;-) I think the 911 was probably more "hand assembled".

Ludvigsen states that the 964 in 1991 took 120 hours to assemble, compared to 76 hours for the 993 in 1995.

I don't think it was a case that the factory suddenly switched from hand-assembly to mechanised processes with any generation of car. The reality is that Porsche had engaged the Toyota/Japanese consultants from the late 80s, resulting in progressive mechanisation of the assembly. Certainly by the introduction of the 996, the factory was geared up to churn out the cars at a much higher rate, and the amount of hand assembly required was significantly less than with any previous generation.

The squeaks you are hearing in the 993 could be the front windshield.
