A cold Winter morning Cars & Coffee in SoCal (Irvine 12-22-12)
Well, like many of you in other parts of the country, we have seen a brutal dose of Winter this past week. NickyP, Niche, cgfen (& wife Maya), and myself braved the temps hovering at 38-40F early yesterday morning for a run up to Irvine C&C. We rolled in about 6:15am, in time for some of Nick's early 911 buddies, already there in full force, to bid him a "good afternoon". Javier and I were ogling what we first thought to be a pre-A 356, which turned out to be Jeff Zwart's 1948 Gmund coupe-one of the first 50 cars built by Porsche! We spent several minutes talking to Jeff-a really nice guy-about it. Funny, as cool a collection as he has, most that come into his shop walk right past this car. It was our vote as probably the coolest car there yesterday.
Ran into Eric (mcipseric) and his wife too.
But, we did see the typical array of just about everything the SoCal car culture offers up here. A few pics to enjoy....

Nice pics Ed. I Saw Zwart's Gmund Coupe in Monterey 2 or three years ago; it's an incredibly simple & elegant car - just look at the wipers.
Now, about that mustang.....

I had to throw that in-the neon/LED lights up front sure were "awesome". Then, when he got out and hit the remote control hydraulics, well, it certainly was "worth a look".

What a great selection of cars, thanks for sharing
Hate to be negative at all in this thread, but seriously, WTF is this?
Nevermind, I don't want to know.
The one that kept my eye the longest...
And is there a better looking car being produced today than the R8? IMHO, no. Just perfect lines.
Also, slightly off-topic but I think you'll enjoy this Ed, I remember you posting about Palomar at least a couple times...

We talked about that yesterday-hopefully another run in early January!

Seriously, that guy in the transformer Mustang was there last week and did the same thing.. pulled up, revved a few times, also worth mentioning- he has a fake blowoff valve sound as he was revving, then got out, stood a few feet back, and played with the remote for the hydraulics..

Jeff mentioned the Gmund at Tech Tactics a few weeks ago. Probably wasn't the proper car to roll on out to Ontario in, so he brought the bookend (?) to it in the RS 4.0. (Would have pretty much been worth the whole Tech Tactics event just to have him speak.)

Ed, thanks for posting the photos. It was a good time at Cars & Coffee yesterday; I always enjoy the drive up and seeing all the cars and some good friends. The most amazing thing about C & C in Irvine is the diversity of cars you see there throughout the year. And with about 500 cars on an average Saturday there is something for everyone. The Mustang looked liked a life size Hot Wheels car to me; not my deal, but you had to appreciate the effort and execution behind it.
Jeff's little Gmund coupe was a piece of history and I'm glad he brought it and that we could chat with him a bit. Jeff has some great toys and he's great about sharing them.
Looking forward to more visits up the coast next year! Merry Christmas to all.
