Default First drive in the 993...compare to 964

One thing I thought about when I first drove the 97 993 C2 MT is how much it felt the same as my 91 964 C2 MT.

Are these cars that similar or do I have to drive them around more?

The only difference I noticed was the smell...my 964 has that old smell to it but it is about 130K miles compared to the 58K miles on the 993.

My 964 actually made less noise too when I drive it...the 993 bushings or shocks seem to be squeaky a little when hitting bumps. The 993 may also be a little stiffer in the cornering.

Avert your eyes...

My 993 seems much more insulated inside, much quieter. It also seems smoother on the road, more refined.

I like both the 964 and the 993. Both are fantastic for what I want in a Porsche.

They are close enough that they share many similar qualities, yet different enough to appeal to the discerning owner to make either preference a great choice to own.

I would gladly have one of each ......

actually, i'd like about four of each !

964
- RS America
-94 Turbo in black (i'm a Bad Boys)
-94 Carrera 4 (widebody, no rear spoiler)
-89 Carrera 4 , the first major 911 change
and let's throw in an America Roadster for a sunny day substitute

993
- 97 Carrera S. Silver with black sport seat interior (still happy with my purchase ten plus years later)
- 993 Turbo. Bugs should be killed Fast
- 993 RS ya, ya .. I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic to own one, and probably in the wrong tax bracket.
- triple black 993 cabriolet
- Substitute= An Adventurine / Cashmere C4S at stock ride height for the days the others may have trouble with the snow.

had a 993, and have a 964 now. Agree with all the posts above. Both great cars. the 964 is a little more raw in my opinion

+1.

To the OP...they are essentially the same car. At the very least it's fair to say they are closer to each other to any predecessor or successor Carreras.

Incidentally...my 964 was no more raw or less refined than my 997. More-so, the 964 felt more solid overall.

I'm now shopping for 993 C2S or TT because I'd like to experience them all!

They feel similar because you compare the same model (C2), engine and parts are mostly the same. I had a 964 C4 cab and tought the same until I tried C2S and TT (got a TT), the wide chassis made a worthy difference and both were a nice upgrade from my 964. I can't compare insulation since I had a cab and now a coupe.

When I switch cars, i like to have a noticeable difference, so i would not change a 964 C2 for a 993 C2.

The 993 is a more insulated and refined version of the 964, but with curves that kill.

One of the biggest differences between the 964 and 993 mechanically is the rear suspension -> The 993's rear suspension is supposed to really help at the limits to help control the dreaded terminal oversteer. On normal street and highway driving, it's not that noticeable, perhaps less road noise from the rear in the 993.

So if your test drives are around the city or highway, you will not notice much difference in the suspension, so it comes down to looks, with the different fenders/bumpers of the 993.

A 96 or later 993 will have a bit more low end grunt with the Varioram -> its noticeable to me for sure.

Cheers,

Mike
