Porsche got the 993 all wrong...
So, after another upgrade I am even more convinced that Porsche sold out to the softies of the world when they made the 993. I have upgraded slowly over my 3 years of ownership including Walrod Bushings, PSS10s, Fister exhaust, RS LW flywheel and clutch and RS motormounts. I thought I had it near perfect...until today.
Just installed Fister Short Shift Kit and am delighted to say that the shifter feels right...the way it should have been from the factory. Mechanical, more precise and of course shorter. It does not compare to the newer shifters of today but if I wanted a newer P car I would have bought one...oh yeah, I did that already and it just didn't work out.
Thanks again to Darin and Mark for their great engineering and assistance. SSK is great!

I think Porsche was building for the masses, not all hard core enthusiasts.. the rubber in the assembly also degrades over time, so the feeling could have been better 15 years ago when new.
either way.. the solid universal joint + shorter throw is amazing! I have done all the same 'tightening' upgrades and love where the car is right now. next project is to re-do the amp + speakers to make them work (currently my stereo is unplugged to get around the speed sensor issue throwing the spoiler light on the dash and disabling cruise control.. Stage3's + cracked window are the only tune needed.. hehe - im in love!)
FD ROCKS!

There's something to be said about the 911 being a car that can comfortably be driven every day. Porsche did make tightened & hardened up versions for those that wanted it.
Not saying your car isn't comfortable, just my two cents worth is all.

If the 993 is for softies then what is the 991 for?
I mean I think that the 993 is definitely a bit too soft for me in stock form and eventually I want up to do all the upgrades you mentioned, however, I think for the average consumer it was still too hard/raw even back then when people were used to the "classic" 911s. Just look at the sales figures for that...
And I kind of get annoyed when I see people today driving their brand new 911s b/c I know most bought them just to have a 911, not because they appreciate the car's history, driving dynamics, driving experience, etc. Porsche had to change to get more sales but as long as they're producing the hardcore versions I think we'll be OK.

Ummm, Andy... you've owned an '82, 911, right? I think there's a big improvement the 993 transmission and shifter compared to those.
And, yes, I have a short shifter and FD Golden rod - great improvement over stock 993. But even the stock one is miles ahead of older shifters. So the "sold to softies" comment is a bit out of place in case of 993 shifter, specifically.

if it wasn't for a lot of those people, there wouldn't be as many classic Porsches on the road today. Porsche needed customers with fat checkbooks as much as they needed actual Porsche enthusiasts.
