late 80's 930 versus 993?

Actually, the 993 interior holds up pretty damned well, IMO. Mine looks great-and even more so in a car that will be 19 years old next year with 73K miles.
930s... are not... for everyone.
Thankfully 8-).
Special car for special people (my mommy seyz im speshul)... 965s a great combination of elements but power steering and somewhat jellybeanish styling (and pink tail lights gasp) make them their own breed IMO.
Best thing that's yet been said... ask 10 people get 10 answers 8-)
Biggest thing going against either 965/930/Carrera 3.2... they're simply old cars at this point, and old-car-isms start kicking you in the nutes here there everywhere, and that just gets old quickly IMO.
Read ^that sentence^ again - if ^this^ is not "you" (who you are and what you're either game to DIY or shovel constant boatloads'ocash at)... then these... are not... for "you". If you appreciate the elemental involvement and primitive rawness and enjoy rolling up your sleeves or peeling off greenbacks to throw @ your Wrench (or both, d'oh)... well giddyup.
I can drive / use my 993 more, be more refreshed after, spend more time fixing chinsey interior issues (unacceptable low point for Porsche) more than fixing tedious 930 CIS issues 8-). And the 993 is speshul in it's own right in its own way...
I think I chuckled hardest @ the "nice little cars" bit... nice / little enough to grasp huge Podiums in the '70s and ingnite the 911 turbo revolution... game changer status... yeah... nice little car LOL. That's kindasorta like saying the 917 or 962 were nice little cars...

I know what you mean Ed... I'm speaking relative to my 930, the materials (dash, leather) are no where near on par unfort. The hard plastic dash and extensive cheap vinyl are particularly offensive IMO, and things just don't 'feel' as good or seem to be wearing as well overall.

No doubt that a proper 930 is a wonderful, exhilirating car. No doubt, nor exaggeration. BUT, it comes at a cost ...much of which has already been outlined here. It's a choice whose parameters simply need to be weighed. If I only wanted a pure kick-in-the-pants-rarely-driven-fun beast, I know which I'd take. Well, who says those are mutually exclusive? Though not a redhead in my case, how about you add in that she also owns a 930? Was a great time to own a shop and work on these cars when they were more-or-less new!

Oh, and funny how I instructed in an original owner, 100% stock 930 4 speed last year. I guess the guy brings it out to the track every year or so. We weren't going slow, nor was he really pushing it. What a benign ride.

Most 993 NAs don't have much leather in the interior vs the 993 TT which is pretty much full leather.

I now know if I wanted a better interior I should have held out for one w/ options - not the end of the world.

Granted, a stocker leaves a lot of potential (a **** ton!) on the table, but any 930 is anything but "benign". No offense taken or anything, just a really really really really odd observation 8-)...
Howabout hearing back from the OP - we've provided plenty 'o data on all sides of the aisle... what of all this speaks to YOU?

Ken, since the 1974 debut of the 930 @ the Paris Auto Show (silver / tartan which I've anecdotally sat in)... I don't think the words "benign ride" and "930" have ever been used in conjunction.

If you've come up through the generations of 911s, what's the big deal? You get all your braking done in a straight line, you roll onto the throttle (which is just more of an nuanced skill in a 930, given the low compression and tall gearing that leaves you in a black hole of performance 9 corners out of 10), the car understeers until it doesn't, and you're off down the straight.
Now, running as described in my earlier post above, say a 2:15 lap at Thunderhill, it IS pretty benign with a competent driver who understands the car, but isn't hell bent on running a fastest lap. I'll grant you I might not have described the ride similarly if we were with a 930 3.0 v 1.0 with 185/215 CN36s and plain ol' 911S aluminum calipers up front. I'm glad one of those wasn't the first 930 I got to drive............

And ROFLMAO @ "the black hole of performance 9 corners out of 10"... right? HA! 'That' sure does take practice to get right. I guess that's where the benign part confused me - once you get it right, I suppose you could propose that - it's just a matter of getting it right 8-).
I hustled my bud's ring / pinion'd '77 3.2 stroker in and around The Dragon area and boy those early brakes are simply WOODEN... nooooooooooo thannnnnnnnnnnnnnks. More than a few hole puckering indicents... it's funny how one somehow convinces oneself that the puckerage actually existentially slows the car down. I think mine was cramped for a week afterward...

Here's another question: Can you buy a 993 or 930 of equal quality for the same money? As someone in the market and having looked at both, it seems like the sweet spot for a 930 is just a tad higher than that of the 993.
