Default late 80's 930 versus 993?

What would you choose and why. And yes I know I posted this in a 993 forum

These are both two very different wants that are occaisionally in the same price range.

Thanks,

For my needs/desires, the 993 is a better choice. The P-car is primarily for the wife and I to take road trips in, so the comfortable interior and AC mean the 993.

They are quite different cars. I believe the 930s are great platforms to modify and get loads of horsepower out of, but that doesn't suit my needs. 993 is plenty of power for what I can deal with.

your needs/wants may be very different however.

Have you driven both? pick the one that appeals to you most for what you want.

930
Classic look with tail
Temperamental shift linkage needs to be adjusted just right.
Shocks, pads, rotors and other stuff really inexpensive and easy to service.
Non-power steering very light to touch with a rack that lasts the life of the car.
Lots of body and other inexpensive parts available.
Valve adjustment every 15 K or so.
Classic it’s always the tail coming around road feel pushed near the edge.
Stock 15" or 16" tires give very smooth road feel with lots of roll-over warning that the *** end is about to let loose.

993 - A more refined and more expensive date:
Parts more expensive, lots of stuff needs replacement over life of car;
Suspension, valve lifter cartridges, rack etc.
Will encounter more out of body engine drive train experiences.
Very nice modern feel shifting
Very nice clutch
Vastly superior handling

Both are a joy to own. Women like the 993 better as it is easier to drive around town and park.

930 is a good platform to modify if your bank account is a bottomless pit
930 is a total dinosaur compared to a 993
930 doesn't seem to make sense if it's your only Porsche
930 Would make a nice addition to any Porsche collection... if you can find a good one that hasn't been crashed
930 Prices are all over the map, much easier to find 993 at right price

Find a 930 that's not been modded to death. Usually, not for the best. I also, with the exception of "similar" HP, think this is a silly comparo. A much more relevant comparo would be '84-89 Carrera vs 993. Then, it comes down to personal wants, needs, etc.

As to the comment on "inexpensive parts", someone needs to price check in aisle 3- all Porsche parts for earlier cars are getting expensive. Go price the PARTS for a legitimate rebuild, and tell me an 80's 911 variant is cheap to own/fix. Yes, shocks and torsion bars are cheaper than PSS10's.

Night and day, except they are both close in horsepower and width of rear.

take the Turbo out of the equation...how about comparing an 84-89 Factory 491 Turbo Look car to a 993. My love affairs with Porsche's always ended at the 84-89 491's, while the Turbo versions have become more affordable...any but the 89 model year has the old crappy 4 speed. Most are pretty heavily modded, and just night and day to drive compared to a well sorted normally aspiraied 993.

The body curves between the two are very comparable, but the 993 is just so much more modern. Better ride and handling, driveability, and ac that works pretty damn good in stock form.

The wide body 964's are sweet also, the rare turbo look C4 is beautiful, but they're either wayyy expensive, or trashed. A narrow body 993 has all the body beautiful of either a wide body 3.2 Carrera or a 964.

Drive what you can, walk around them...ideally while they are next to each other to help you decide. You'll know when it's right, I sure did.

Pretty much summed up most of my decision criteria when I was at this exact junction in 2000. I went 993 and never looked back. Well, kind of ...I ended up getting an 82SC for the track several years later. The latter fulfills my itch for the go-cart feel and nostalgia.

But the 993 really is the ultimate do-all sports car, IMHO. Perfect mix of commuter-duty ammenities, from HVAC that actually keeps you comfortable in all weather, to feeling connected to the road w/o getting beaten up by it. Your desired mission for the car defines the choice, IMHO.

My wife prefers the creature comforts and the plush coil over suspension of the 993 compared to the jarring torsion bar suspension of the very similar 82SC. Something so civil with the thermostatic controls of the 993 compared to the two red **** levers next to the e-brake and sliders on the dash where variablility in temperature is not an option.

930?!

964 is a fair alternative to 993...

but the 930 just has too much plastic impact bumper crap on it.... even the square fog lamps are too 80's...

I know guys who use 930's for PCA racing because they are cheap and disposable.

In all seriousness, the 930 is a nice little car, but the 993 is epic.

Thanks for the current opinion boys! I was wondering what the latest was. I did search but times and info change. What if I had asked about the 1999 911 in 2000?

I'm leaning toward 993. But one red 930 with low miles and few owners pushed me off course.
