930 Would make a nice addition to any Porsche collection... if you can find a good one that hasn't been crashed
930 Prices are all over the map, much easier to find 993 at right price

Nice color combo Justin!

I had an 89' 930 Cab. I wish I had not sold it. At that point in my life I had to sell it to move on. Most don't have a 993 as their first car, although it can be. The 930 is probably the best third car Porsche ever made.

Huh? I've seen very few 930's in racing guise the last 10 years. They aren't "cheap" and SC's and Carreras are exponentially more plentiful in club racing, and arguably more "disposable".

+993

Cheap and 930 are rarely used in the same sentence.

agreed w/ some sentiment here much more than other 8-)

depends on what you're looking to do w/ the car, your expectations, tolerances, bankroll, etc.

4yrs / 20k in my 930 was bed-post fodder... had to be done, bucketlist

my 993 is a better 'car', and better to 'drive' (car / drive being used and defined in the 'appliance' sense)

my 930 was innnnfinnnnnitely more exhilharating... intimately involving... soul altering

I enjoy commuting in my 993, notsomuch in my 930 (I did regardless, was cushy compared to the TR3 commutes).

I miss shooting flames, the Hammer of Thor donkeypunch boost, the whistle whine whir of the ingestive process, the decelerative anarchy of my 930.

The 993 is a well educated professional business women, svelt, mature... well poised and seductive. You could griningly tap that all day for years on end and be no luckier.

The 930 is the redheaded tequilla slamming firecracker sexpistol where you wake up the next morning, your wallet's gone and you can't figure out what's been jammed 'where'...all the while you're paradoxically left wanting more.

My wife surprisingly didn't complain much about the 930, other than I smelled like 'car' when I walked into house, and that I hurt her neck or jammed her hair clip into her noggin when I hit the boost bong too hard.

The 930 HVAC is actually thermostatically controlled in the later cars, but it is still teh suxor - I yanked my A/C stem to stern and the heat was an all/nothing affair due to parsnickety system issues. Didn't matter, after one sells their soul to that Boostdevil one stops noticing things. For better / worse 8-). My 993 air will chill a witch's tit.

I think what's her face prefers time in the 993 overall but isn't very vocal either way. Tellingly... she's actually driven the 993 1x thus far (in a parking lot)... never (evereverevereverever) was the 930 even an option in that regard - incomprehensible, not happening, uh uh forget it.

Tell us your expectations / goals and we can tell you more. Agreed a 3.2 Carrera to 993 comparo is more accurate - a 930 is an entirely different league car in many regards...

ps. "930s are cheap / disposable" ROFLMAO... ummmmmm... no 8-). And the 4gang was somewhat endearing in a twisted sense - something about only 4 lonnnnnnnnng (infinite) gears and their match to the boost curve was just giggle inducing - 135 in 3rd??? Bulletproof, tho crippled w/ recalcitrant shifter....

In all seriousness, the 930 is a nice little car, but the 993 is epic.
you really make some insanely idiotic statements, you know that?

firstly, as mentioned above, a decent 930 is nowhere near cheap, nor are they disposable, cheap to fix or maintain, or particularly good on the track in anything near stock form.

My mistake.
I was thinking about SC's and Carreras being used for racing and thus disposable and not the 930 as i stated originally..... (they are all the same dog with different fleas in my books however.)

Sorry fellas.....

Still not a big fan of 930.
Anything from the late 70's to late 80's is not as desireable as the 964 and 993 IMHO.

Not sure which shop you've ever run, but from what I observe about 993s (or 964s) now v. 930s I had under my care back then when they were new-to-10 years old, maybe 30-35 cars, for the cars regularly driven I'd probably have one in the shop monthly for something--fried clutch, broken piston(s), and/or bent valves being the most common items needing repair.

I think I posted something not too long ago about the guy who couldn't lay off Dial-A-Boost, and I had to fix burned pistons three times in about six months.

Back to the original post, even a quick drive in both will tell you which will fit your needs best. Hilarious demonstration of this yesterday--drove the newly reacquired $7500 '80 SC to the shop. I was glad I made it out here. And the car's not that bad.

Better alternative to both...964 Turbo.
I've been down this path more than a couple times, driven most variations to the theme, and am very happy with the 964 Turbo.
Regardless, this is a personal choice. If you ask 10 people, you'd likely get 10 different answers. If you can't own all at the same time, then just own one-by-one...

I happen to own one of each right now. They are two TOTALLY different cars. The 930 feels like it's from a past generation where the 993 is much more drivable and can be used on a daily basis. Granted I live in Phoenix where the AC in a 930 will never work well enough. I do love the 930 for a blast up into the mountains on a weekend because iti's so different from anything else that it still feels very special in certain ways. There is nothign that can replace the feel of the boost coming on. Maintenance had not been an issue on either car. My 930 is basically stock with 112K miles on the clock. It's had one top end rebuild at 95K and that's about it for major service items. The more miles you're going to put on it the more the 993 makes sense. It's a much more modern car even though there is only 9 years difference in age. That's my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

930s... are not... for everyone.

Thankfully 8-).

Special car for special people (my mommy seyz im speshul)... 965s a great combination of elements but power steering / hydraulic clutch and somewhat jellybeanish styling (and pink tail lights - gasp) make them their own breed IMO.

Best thing that's yet been said... ask 10 people get 10 answers 8-)

Biggest thing going against either 965/930/Carrera 3.2... they're simply old cars at this point, and old-car-isms start kicking you in the nutes here there everywhere, and that just gets old quickly IMO.

Read ^that sentence^ again - if ^this^ is not "you" (who you are and what you're either game to DIY or shovel constant boatloads'ocash at)... then these... are not... for "you". If you appreciate the elemental involvement and primitive rawness and enjoy rolling up your sleeves or peeling off greenbacks to throw @ your Wrench (or both, d'oh)... well giddyup.

I can drive / use my 993 more, be more refreshed after, and spend more time fixing chinsey interior issues (unacceptable low point for Porsche) more than fixing tedious 930 CIS issues 8-). The 993 is speshul in it's own right in its own way...

I think I chuckled hardest @ the "nice little cars" bit... nice / little enough to grasp huge Podiums in the '70s and ingnite the 911 turbo revolution... game changer status... yeah... nice little car LOL. That's kindasorta like saying the 917 or 962 were nice little cars...
