Default DME Relay Prices

Reading the horror stories w/r to DME relay failures and repeated warnings by RLers to keep a spare in the car, I came across these 2 parts:

1) from Suncoast 993-615-227-01 $63.69 (said to be 'directly from Porsche')

2) from Pelican 993-615-227-01-M76 $27.50 (Stribel brand)

Question: any issue w/ the cheaper part from Pelican saving $$, or spring for the Porsche one for peace of mind?

Thanks.

Considering that a Porsche parts fails early and often, why would it represent a peace of mind?

No, seriously, it's a relay. A German made relay at that. They are all schwah. Buy the cheaper one.

They were in the $20 range last time I looked (albeit that was a few years ago). Check Ebay as well.

The original OE relay lasted in my car 16 years.
The unbranded unmarked aftermarket relay lasted 2 years.
Go figure?

I don't think the relays (any of them) are made in Germany. IIRC mine was made in Hungary.

Yep, the Pelican one is made in Hungary.

I'm voting with the wallet and going cheapo...

We sell the Kaehler brand with great success. The one to stay away from is URO aka APA.

the original ones, I believe, were made in Germany. I can go check on mine if needed.

The point is, though, that they are made to German standards. Which, in my opinion (as a former EE with a lot of experience with German design, development and manufacturing in industrial electrical devices and wiring) are unadulterated crap. YMMV, of course. I don;t know why that is but I'm convince that I'd prefer pretty much anything to German wires, replays, switch gear, etc. Look at 993: DME relays dying, window switches falling apart, HVAC motors burning up, wire harnesses fraying and shorting, odometer gears melting, cold solders on VDO boards, cab latch motors breaking gears... And I consider 993 to be pretty robust in that respect, at least comparing to 4 BMWs that I've personally owned and dozens that I had a pleasure of observing very closely.

The Original Porsche relay and the Kaehler relay are both made in Germany.
