convert cig lighter to switched power?
#4
I found it easier to install an auxiliary lighter plug (actually I got one that has 3 outlets) and wire it to the sunroof power, which is switched. I attached in to the center console on the passenger side, right where the passenger's left foot would be. so it is kind of tucked away, but reachable.
I plug my GPS into it, so it powers down with the car. haven't needed to use the other 2 outlets yet, but I suppose if my wife needs to charge her ipad, she can.

any other ideas on this? would rather avoid playing with ignition.
i dont want to add more clutter to the console with aux plug right now thanks.
havent looked behind the dash but cant i splice the power wire into
one of the other switched power sources? or fusetap into one (like my v1 hardwire)?

John,
Easiest place to pick up a switched power source I have found. See below. Used this for my Escort hard wire.

Be careful on how much power you need to draw - if it's large then be careful when selecting the circuit. If it's very large (like the lighter) then you can wire a separate fused circuit from the battery, and put a relay inline to control the power as the ignition is turned on.
For small draws like a phone most tap points should be good.
Cheers,
Mike

Your shortcuts may work for teenaged girls texting, but when posting on a technical forum for answers to your questions, common English is preferred. That's the elaboration on the advice and pic.

um..i got the pic. at least he had a sense of humor.
spare me the holier than thou lecture.
i've been on this board for almost a decade also.
perhaps your critique of posting etiquette is more appropriate for OT
and not the hallowed grounds of a porsch-ah 'technical forum'.
btw thx 4 ur input. now how bout a nice hot cup of stfu?

John, you are welcome. That sunroof circuit should be fat with amp capacity for anything you use the cigarette lighter for. Except maybe the cigarette lighter itself !!
But that is an easier wiring run - although getting the to back of the cigarette lighter is a mystery to me.
Good luck.

John,
You may want to check out the posts below by Bruce7. This is a very elegant and factory look mod that is probably easier than getting to the rear of the cigarette lighter. That would give you two outlets, one switched and one unswitched.
I bought the components to do this myself this winter when my 993 is out of service.

thanks again, thats pretty cool. wonder if one could get that outlet to the blank next to the oem socket?
i currently have a dummy lighter button there. it was easy to drill a pilot hole into.
ps didnt realize that the lighter used so much juice. thanks to those who have pointed that out.
cheers!

its also common courtesy to contribute relevant information to a thread
rather than just put your two cents in on someone's grammar.
if u care to discuss further (and i don't) , then put it in a PM.
cheers john.
