Default Adding a 12v Accessory Outlet

The 993 does not have a 12v accessory outlet other than the cigar lighter in the dash.
If you want to power more than one device, then you have to use a 2-into-1 cable or
some other multi-outlet adaptor. It's not ideal though and having a 2nd 12v outlet would
be better.

Porsche has a 12v accessory outlet which is used in the 987/997 cars and it can be
easily installed into the 993. It comes in 2 parts:

plug socket: 955-652-107-00
clamping ring with lid: 997-652-103-00

Total cost is about $10 from Sunset Porsche.

I took my parts to Phantom Electronics in Thousand Oaks, CA and asked them to
install it for me. It took about 30 minutes for a total cost of $65 including some wiring
and in-line fuse.

Power was taken from the hazard warning lights switch and the ground was screwed
directly into the body panel inside the console switch area. The outlet was mounted
into the inspection panel on the right side of the console tunnel. A fuse is wired
in-line with the power wire to the outlet.

Pictures of the installation can be seen at:
https://picasaweb.google.com/bruce.c...gCPKapuD7hrIJ#

Unlike the 993 cigar lighter, the 12v accessory outlet provides a tight mount for a GPS or
radar detector power adapter. The plugged-in adaptor will not wobble or work free which can
happen with the cigar lighter. This is because the cigar lighter is built to a different spec and is
slightly larger in diameter than the 12v accessory plug socket. My Valentine V1 radar detector
power plug adapts ok to the cigar lighter but the Garmin 1490T power plug fits better in the
12v accessory outlet.

Although I did not do the installation, I watched the tech and can offer some idea on how it was
installed. To begin with, he took the clamping ring and laid it on the inspection door in position
where the outlet was to be mounted. Then using a magic marker, traced the inside circle of the
ring. A drill bit that resembled a cone was used to cut the hole through the carpet and plastic.
The plug socket and clamping ring was then assembled into the hole and oriented as desired.
I wanted the lid to swing down like it is installed on the 987.

Next, the switch console trim pieces are simply pulled straight off the console to reveal the wiring.
A pencil-like test light was used to find the power wire for the hazard lights warning switch.
The power wire for the switch was then cut and a crimp connector attached.
The power wire for the 12v accessory outlet was then twisted together with the other end of the cut
wire for the switch and crimped together. The wiring was then taped up to protect it.
I believe a 15 amp fuse was used in-line with the power wire to the 12v accessory outlet.

To ground the outlet, a self-tapping screw was used to drill into the body panel in the open area
under the switches.

Nice! I've done a similar thing with a socket from Radio Shack. I only tapped into the sunroof switch since I never use it. I power an iPod and a GPS that way. Only difference is I decided to keep the wires hidden more or less.

Bruce,

A very tidy solution to the problem. Thank you for sharing the info and the photos. Another mod to add to the list...

Hi Bruce - Isn't the power from the hazard unswitched...so you'd have to remember to unplug any accessories or risk possibly running down your battery? Thanks for sharing the pics...it's a very clean install

Hi David,

Yes, it is unswitched, so right, need to be aware of power drain
when used with the key out or in the off position for a long period of time.

This is my mod.
Got a 1-3 from a trade show, this the Boeing logo. Initially it was designed to plug into a plug, I removed the end and soldered some zip cord to it and tapped it into the sunroof power, so it is switched. I leave the GPS plugged in and have 2 spares, in addition to the standard plug, which I have a map light plugged in.

Thanks for confirmation. I really like the install...very factory look and clean....I would consider installing two...one switched and one unswitched

Bruce,

Would this be an easy switch out for the accessory outlet on the dash? Would it secure a radar detector plug better? (My current one spits the adapter out enough and silently enough that it appears my radar is working and then it isn't.) Mine would never hold everything you had attached in the photo gallery.

Hi,

The accessory outlet I used provides a tight fit for the radar detector or GPS
power plugs. The cigar lighter has a slightly larger diameter outlet and that is
why things plugged there tend to loosen.

I guess your first question is could you replace the cigar lighter with the accessory outlet?
I suppose you could, but that would be like changing the stereo. If you're ok
with a non-original look then I guess it would be alright. I think though that it is
better to keep the original cigar lighter and add the accessory outlet.

Hope that helps,

-bruce

Will this new add-on work with a battery tender/charger?

Yes, since the connection is hot all the time you could use it to plug
in a battery charger.
