Default Black Smoke...A/C and my oldest child.

So was out tooling about in the 95 993 with top down and oldest male child (19 years of age) in passenger seat....

A/C OFF, top down, heat not on, fan not on....

Oldest son said "um, Dad, I'm pretty sure you won't be happy with the puffs of black smoke coming out of the A/C vent."

Um, I'm not.

Happened once, lasted 20 seconds, has not happened again in 2 weeks.....

Oil levels stable, no visible oil leaking from engine.....

A/c works poorly, if that matters.....

thoughts? suggestions?

Bad, horrible jokes?

Did the smoke have any odor? I can imagine if you had a valve cover leak, that it could seep into the heat exchangers and possibly get into the cabin.

Now I have had a faint mist when it was raining out and the AC was on, it wasn't smoke, looked more like fog blowing from the vents.

I did not notice any odor. It was much more than a mist, however and was clearly black.....

I'd bet it wasn't smoke or mist, but a thin dust of the foam material used in the ductwork to control airflow. Have you ever noticed pieces of material flying out at you before---this happens in many older cars.

If not, then see this thread:

Maybe one of the air flow control servos giving up the ghost? I can't explain why, but have seen some notes of smoke from them in the air vents before. A quick OBD check would reveal any problems.
Cheers,
Tore

Thanks boys....I searched for prior threads but missed the linked thread.

I'll start the process of looking at tubing and oil leaks.....it has not happened again.....but makes me nervous, none-the-less

That's almost certainly condensing moisture and nothing to worry about. It can happen on hot, really humid days when the A/C is operating at peak cooling, especially at lower fan speeds.
