Question 993 fix or sell?

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I have an original 993 C4 cab from 1996 that has been sitting in my garage gathering dust for couple of years. I took the cover off it last week and replaced the battery. I have developed what looks like a heat fracture on the front windshield and it needs a new transmission.

Car has only low 30k miles and is loaded. Still drives great. I called around to a couple of Porsche dealers in my area and it looks like $6-9k to replace windshield + do full tranny including flywheel. I also called a few 'sports car garages' and they are quoting like $5-7k.

So question is it better to get all work done at Porsche dealer for resale value?

Also just out of curiosity what is this car worth to a collector/buyer? I typed in blue book and asked a dealer and i get price of $38k and $19k !!! Talk about a spread!

Thanks for the advice!

Al

Location, also.

Zero idea on why it needs a "new" transmission. Description of the symptom(s) will be immensely helpful.

If your question is what is better for resell re: dealer work or independent, I would say it does not matter as long as the choice is reputable. To a dealer, these are older cars, and often the mechanics they have are not as familiar with the 993's. I would take it to a good reputable independent.

But like Ken asks, give us more details on the why you think the transmission needs work? And by doing the "flywheel" you mean a clutch job? It should not need one at that mileage unless it was abused a bit.

Cheers,

Mike

Wow! you guys are fast!

I will post some pictures this weekend when I get up there. The car is in northwestern CT in my summer house. The clutch slips when i accelerate too much, and is probably due to my learning to drive stick with this car in the first few years i had it

It is triple black. Has 18" wheels with turbo rims (factory) all the options, dual power seats, etc... I think the mileage is 34k or thereabouts, the tires are brand new basically, and i am the only owner. I had a spin-out with it back in 1998 and had a fender dented which was replaced by a Porsche dealer upstate NY where the accident happened. There is tiny dent in the driver-side front fender, probably 1 inch long by 0.25" deep and the driver side headlight was replaced and the washer thing is not installed, (but i have it in the glove box)

whew! I think thats most of it.

When I spoke to the Porsche dealer guy about the transmission he said, that if the flywheel looked good i could save $2k by not replacing it, but they would not know until they got in there.

Apart from that the car looks great, the engine does not even have 1 spot of grease on it and the factory stickers still look new!

In 1997 I got this car up to 175mph on I-95 for a bit, and cruised at 155mph for about 20 mins... WOW! Talk about a thrill... unfortunately it has not been driven much since 2001/2 and certainly not much over 30-40mph since then! In fact I don't think its been in 6th gear in almost a decade! ouch!

It sounds like there s nothing wrong with your transmission, but it needs to be removed to replace the clutch. In the AWD cars, the engine will also need to be dropped, although some shops find it easier simply to remove the transmission. The big issue here is the labor to get access to the clutch. The flywheel may also be OK, but you won't know for sure until the clutch is removed. Properly driven, a clutch can last 200,000+ miles. Perhaps get some driving pointers from someone. Keep it. A great car.

Then it doesn't sound like there's a transmission problem at all.

I'm sure many in your general location will recommend good independents, and a glass installer familiar with 993s.

Fix it. Take it to Hairy Dog Grrrage, Automobile Associates, or Musante Motorsports to take care of it for you. Those guys know air-cooled 911s.

I actually may be in your area on Saturday after lunch and can take a look at it if you like.

Al,
They are more than fast....they're good! Welcome to the greatest place for 993 info! These folks (and searching the archives) are a wealth of info. May "issues" on these cars can be handled fairly easily and hardly cost the $$$ you may be quoted initially. A good independent who knows air-cooled 911s, or 993s specifically, is far better than a dealership.

You'll find a lot of encouragement here to fix her up and keep driving her, but perhaps a little more often!

Awwww are you serious? Just junk it.

On a serious note - the track is the place to learn the limits of the car and improve your driving abilities.

Best of luck

So, you drove for almost 52 miles, on a public road, at about 155 MPH? Interesting stuff.
